As I walk back to Mr. C's class I hear my phone go off again. This time I ignore it. The light humming noise begins to bother me so I simply shut my phone off. Mr. C is passing out homework to his next class and I walk over to him and tell him my excuse. He says it's okay and I tear out of the classroom. Off to Art.

My art teacher, Nancy, passes back our self portraits. I'm proud to say I got an A. Mom would've been too. "Okay everyone, some students will not be here anymore after today. Some of them are the most talented in this class so I wish them well in their artistic journeys in life. Now then, our project that is due today. Get it out and work on it until the bell rings. Remember, this is a project simply of your imagination. No guidelines, no examples. Just make art." I raise my hand, rookie mistake. I forgot about my two inch long cuts on my shoulder. They burn excruciatingly! "Yes Courtney?" She says. "Um..." I feel them all starring at me. Almost as if they've never heard an English word in their life. "How are we to get these back if we aren't going to be here much longer..." My last word slurs. Aftershock I think to myself. "We will mail them back to your house. Or if you have no plans after today, you can come by and pick them up tomorrow." Hallelujah.

The bell rings and I remember I have a message that I didn't read. I grab my phone out of my back pocket and read the text message;

Hi beautiful! I miss you. I know you probably think I'm abandoning
you by leaving you with your father but you can come to
Grandma Gracie's house after school. Hugs and kisses
~Momma

Thanks mom, I roll my eyes.

Somewhere from down the hall I hear a familiar deep manly voice. "HEY!!!"

Uh oh.
