Burning

Above a darkling plain, the cold stars turned slowly, burning red in the smog-filled sky.

Alice adjusted her breathing mask and goggles, wiping away some soot so she could see the sky.

The stars were so far away, and yet so bright that they seemed so much closer, so close that she could reach out and grasp one. She raised a hand so it covered the brightest star in the sky, and closed her fist over it.

Her fist burned. It was as if she had eaten a spicy-hot jalapeno pepper, but with her fist - something hot, something painful, had materialised in her palm, and she opened her hand to see with a sense of dread.

But instead of bone to go with all the blood, she saw only a steel skeleton. Could she really be a robot?

As she looked at the newly revealed robot in shock, it began to head towards her. She was too stunned to move, and its arm reached up to her throat...

"You got something on your neck," the monotone robot voice declared, as it popped her head clean off.
