School the next day wasn't really anything special. I took the quarterlies, and they went alright. I definitely passed, and most likely didn't get any lower than a B-.. hopefully.
After both the tests I walked into the lunchroom and sat down, eating the sandwich I bought myself with money I earned from work. It was going alright, until the one person I was really dreading seeing today walked over to me.
"Reyna Night." I looked up when I heard the queen of all bitches, sluts and trashy white girls say my name, with that annoying high pitched voice of hers.
"Kaya Marone. What do you want?" I said, glaring at her. She'd made my life miserable since the second grade, when she stuck gum in my hair and told everyone I did it because I thought I would look pretty. Or in third grade, when we did a writing assignment for homework and she copied mine and went to the teacher and told her I copied hers instead. So, needless to say, I hated this girl to hell and back.
She gave me a fake smile.
"So how's your daddy doing? Still working in the GCPD I assume? Living the good life? Playing the hero?" She said the last sentence with such sarcastic venom in her voice, it took all of my power not to attack her.
Instead, I just got up from the table and walked away, ignoring all the names she called after me, while the rest of her little minions laughed along with her.
When I got home that day, I didn't expect my dad to be home. I expected another late night, with more crumpled up narratives on the floor and another bowl of instant mac and cheese.
So when I entered the apartment and saw him sitting at the kitchen table, it nearly gave me a heart attack.
"... Dad?" He hadn't noticed me walk through the door, he seemed to be staring down at the table and thinking, concentrating, so when I spoke he jumped a bit and looked up.
"Oh, Reyna. Come here. Sit down." I did as he told me, but reluctantly. he was never home this early, and it sort of worried me about why he was.
"Dad, what's wrong?" After I tossed my bag to the side, I sat across from him at the table, raising an eyebrow. He just shook his head.
"Nothing.. Nothing is really wrong, there's just something I don't want to do it seems that I have to."
I raised my eyebrows, waiting for him to finish that sentence.
"Okay.. are you going to explain that or?.." Jim looked up and ran a hand through his golden, buzz cut hair.
"I have to go to work in about 15 minutes. And I have to work late- reallllyyy late." I sighed and stood up, walking to the fridge to grab myself a glass of milk.
"Okay. Not a big deal. I'll be fine. You've left me home alone overnight before, and I was fine. Besides, I have lots of law and criminal justice homework and projects to work on. So don't worry, I won't party too hard." I smirked, teasing him. We both knew that I would never throw a party when he wasn't home, mainly because I didn't have enough friends for that- but whatever.
"No, you won't. Because I'm taking you with me."
I widened my eyes and basically choked on my drink after he said that. My dad hardly EVER dragged me into anything work related. I get it though, it's a dangerous job, anything can happen, blah blah blah. But, hey, if I was going to become a homicide detective myself, I should get some experience, right? Well, that was my argument anyways.
"Wait, you're actually taking me with you?? Where is this job anyways?" I asked, sitting back down, now extremely curious and interested.
"Arkham. I have to work on interrogating a suspect for a case. I'll leave you with Harvey, he's coming along too. You can do that, just stay with him, right?" Jim rubbed his face again, sighing a little. it was obvious he didn't want me to come along, and I didn't exactly blame him.. The last time I went with him to work ended with me getting lost in the prison and it taking the GCPD an hour to find me.. but I've changed. And hey, I was curious! I nodded in agreement, smiling.
"Yes, I promise!" I thought about everyone I would get to see again. "I get to see Harvey.. Oh and Ed! And Barbara.. Though, I see her often." I smirked at Jim. He was so far in love with Barbara, and I was happy for them. Sure, they were having some.. Issues.. But still. They were a cute couple.
"When do we leave?" I asked, excited to see everyone.
"Whenever you're ready." Jim said, looking up. "Pack an overnight bag, you might need it." I nodded and ran off to my room to pack, excited.
This was going to be fun.
