It'd been a long time since Chloe Beale had ventured out of the Bella House to attend a party on campus. She'd hardly slept the past few weeks - the idea of finals, defending her championship title and someone on her mind. Some might think it petty to be kept awake by these things; rendered restless by the mere thought of any of them. But the anxiety was justified, and it wouldn't leave her head. She hadn't spoken to anyone about how she felt and, though that only made her feel worse, she couldn't bring herself to do it.
"Come on, Chloe," Fat Amy had said, noticing her lying idly on her bed that Wednesday night. "This isn't like you."
"I'm fine, Amy." She replied, sighing. "I just have a lot on my mind right now."
"Oh, you do?" She laughed lightly, winking.
"Hey, what's that supposed to mean?" Chloe asked, now sitting herself up in bed. Amy rolled her eyes to the ground, then to the ceiling and continued avoiding eye contact as Chloe tried to establish it.
"You know..." She mumbled eventually, still looking away. "I had a cousin back in Australia who used to act like you are now."
"Really?" Chloe scoffed, putting her hands in front of her face. It wasn't like her to snap, usually being the bubbliest of all the Bellas. But she hadn't slept in too long, her body felt like it was shutting down piece by piece. That wasn't Amy's fault though, she thought. She softened slightly. "And did they ever stop?"
"Oh, 'course he did, Chlo." She nodded. "Well...he did stop breathing. Nasty fight with a cocker spaniel, you see. Ripped his f-"
"Oh god, Amy!" She cried, holding a hand out for her to finish that story. "Stop it. Look, thanks for stopping by but really I'm not-"
"Chloe, for god's sake," Fat Amy took a step further into the room. "I know you're ginger. But I know that you're at least smart enough not to start fights with vicious dogs like that. Do you get what I'm saying?"
"Amy," Chloe breathed, rubbing the bridge of her nose with her thumbs - trying to calm down. "I have literally no idea what it is that you're saying."
"I'm saying 'don't die, Chloe'! Come to a party with your old pal Fat Amy on Friday! The whole gang's coming. You'll feel much more like yourself, I promise."
Chloe stopped to consider. A party could be nice, she thought. A chance to get out of the house and think of something else, a drink or two aiding that process. She wasn't sure, though. Not yet.
"How about it Chloe?" Fat Amy asked again. "Come on, Beca's coming."
Beca. Of all the people that could've made her feel better, maybe Beca would the most. She'd been avoiding her a little lately, annoyed at how oblivious or just plain uninterested she was, but that only made her long to see her more.
"Alright," She smiled lightly. "I'll come to the party."
Fat Amy pumped her fist. "Crushed it."
