Downstairs in the kitchen, Chloe prepared the pancake batter and began to cook them. She considered the evening's events as she stood there alone. Beca had wanted her to stay home with her. She'd said she loved her. That might mean a relationship to any other people but never for the two of them. It seemed that every advancement Chloe made was rejected by her and it hurt more and more every time. She was so tired - both physically and emotionally. No matter what she did; what they did - she was always so closed off to her. Maybe she wasn't interested, sure. Chloe could accept that. But why did she do things like she had that night if Chloe meant nothing to her?
The sight of the bubbles forming on the final pancake brought her back to the task at hand. She flipped it over, getting a tray out from the cupboard above her. She placed the plate of pancakes on to it and added the final one, having removed it from the pan and turning off the stove. She put the pan into the empty sink and pulled some bottled water from the fridge - one for each of them. She then added a bottle of syrup, two forks, two knives and a box of aspirin before beginning to ascend the stairs.
With her elbow, she opened Beca's bedroom door and entered once again. The smaller girl smiled, sitting up in bed and moving her laptop off of her lap. Chloe sat down beside her, placing the tray between them.
"This is amazing," Beca breathed. "Thank you, Chlo."
She seemed genuinely astonished that someone would want to look after her like this, and Chloe couldn't help but feel a little sorry for the girl. She picked up the aspirin and sighed at the redhead. She'd thought of everything, hadn't she, Beca thought with genuine admiration and a nagging sense of guilt.
Beca took the two sets of knives and forks into her hands and handed one of each over to Chloe. They began to eat in relative silence before Beca stopped.
"Hey," She began, excitedly - perhaps almost anxiously. "Can I play you something?"
"Of course you can," Chloe responded. She loved hearing Beca's mixes, and was happy to see her that happy about something.
Beca pulled the laptop back onto her lap and tapped a few keys here and there before pressing play.
It took a while before Chloe recognised the song, it was an acoustic cover of a reggae one she'd heard a few years back. A little odd, she thought, this not usually being Beca's kind of thing. It was slow; raw and heartfelt - no real sign of editing anywhere. It was distinctly Beca's voice that she could hear, but there was something about it - an almost pleading quality she'd never heard it hold before. The lyrics were what truly got to Chloe, though.
'You took me away from the rest of the world,
When you taught me to love you like this.
Now I hang my head in the canyon of doom,
And I still can be saved by your kiss.'Beca looked up, biting the edge of her lip lightly, and Chloe looked away. Tears were almost forming in her eyes; tears she wanted more than anything to go away.
'Don't go.'
The song ended and the two left the moment hanging in the air.
