Chapter Three:

Hayley was awake, it was five o’clock in the morning and she had been up for hours. She looked to her stomach, her ever growing bump which she was a little frustrated with. Her clothes were beginning not to fit and she was becoming increasingly frustrated with the sickness she was feeling. It was the reason she had been up since what must have been two in the morning she had been throwing up. Morning sickness, she could have sworn. She did not think it meant that early in the morning. Lucas, bless him had been keeping an eye on her for the last few hours rubbing her back and passing her cups of water as she stopped being sick for a few moments. She looked at him and he felt a rush of sympathy towards her. She looked so tired; his wife looked as if all she wanted to do was curl up and sleep for the next week. And if Lucas was honest he would have wanted her to do so she could not go to work with so little sleep it was not good for her and it wasn’t good for the baby.

‘You are not going to work if you are still like this. You need to rest darling’ Lucas looked to her. He didn’t like her being ill at the best of the times but her being sick now for nearly four hours was not making him any easier. Lucas worried about his wife constantly but it seemed that now she was pregnant he found that he was even more worried. He was finding it harder and harder to leave her every day and go to work and not feel the need to text her while she was teaching to make sure she was okay.

She was nearly four months pregnant now and she knew he was only going to be getting worse as the time for her to give birth would be approaching. She also knew that soon they were going to have to tell people outside of the close family i.e. Hayley’s mum and dad. Her stomach was beginning to show the roundness of a little bump and it was only so many times Hayley could use that she was not feeling well when she went out with someone like Beth as to why she couldn’t drink any alcohol. She was sure she was nearly caught out the other day. Beth had looked her so oddly that Hayley almost blurted out that she was pregnant to stop her looking at her like that.

‘Lucas, I need to be there, I am the head of the department’ she sighed, although she would like nothing more than to not go in and go back to bed. What if Ofsted who still had not come to the school decided to make the phone call informing them the school that they would be in within the next few days? Her department would go into meltdown if she was not there to pull them back. She could not be away for too long.

‘And you haven’t had any sleep’ he said, ‘I will phone them and let them know you have been up all night’

Hayley smiled there really was no arguing with him. She knew he was right. She wouldn’t have been able to go into school today. She would not be able to teach because she had not slept.  And if little one who seemed to think that mama could not have any rest or keep much food down then she was going to have to take the day off. She looked to Lucas her eyes drooping.

‘Come here darling’ he pulled her close to him, before leading her back to bed ‘you need to try and get some sleep’

‘Tell that to your child’

‘Oh it’s my child already I thought that was not until the birth’ Lucas spoke, ‘That’s the time you are meant to say you hate me and never want me to touch you again’

‘Don’t get smart’ Hayley said.

Lucas stroked her hair until she had gone to sleep. He reluctantly untangled himself from her firm grip as she had snuggled herself towards him. Kissing the top of her head, he moved to get himself dress and head to work. He kissed her once more before reluctantly pulling himself to head out the door. He would ring her later to see how she is feeling.

As Lucas got to work he was greeted by Harry looking at his watch. Lucas was shocked by this as Harry and he it seemed to be the only ones to be on the grid at the moment. And plus Lucas really was not in the mood for the gentle teasing that Harry often liked to do. It was a miracle he had bothered to have turn up to work if he was honest himself, he would have rather had stayed in bed with his wife.
