"Good morning, Gorgeous."

Josh's voice awoke me from the peaceful sleep that I had fallen into only moments before.

And I did not want to get up. I groaned, mumbling words, if you can even call them that. They were more like sounds, almost silent & completely inaudible.

"I know it was a rough night. It was for both of us, but we have to get up now."

His voice was so gentle and quiet, it was almost like he was trying to help me fall asleep. The meaning of the words were the exact opposite.

"Ditch it." I begged, rubbing my eyes.

It had been a night full of tears, late-night phone calls, and fear.

"You know I can't do that. You can stay here if you really want to.."

"No, no, I promised I'd go." I groaned again.

"There was no way you'd know this would happen--"

"I promised. I'm going."

I climbed out of the bed. As my feet hit the cool wood floor, I smiled back at the man lying in my bed, a smile on his face. Correction: Our bed.

Josh and I are soon-to-be seniors in college, yet at the moment, my focus was Josh. It was Josh, summer barbeque's with friends, the hot dogs and swimming pools associated with the current season, and the sleeping late every day of the week compared to the weekends only.

July was always one of my favorite months, coming in a close third behind May and then October. July was when their was fireworks, laughs, and watermelon.

Josh and I lived together now, which was the best move we could have made. After our freshman year, and our separation due to the dorm rules about males and females together in certain areas, and curfews, we decided it would be best to buy an apartment, despite the stories about roommates from hell. Everyone told us that we shouldn't live together, it was a 'mistake', we were 'asking for fights and disasters'. It was the best choice we ever made.

It took me a while to convince my parents, my dad especially, to allow me to apply, let alone go, to the University of North Carolina with Josh, where he received a free ride with the baseball team.

Only months after moving in to our new, shared appartment, I recieved a terrifying phone call.

"Alexis?" My father started, "I had to take your mother to the emergency room."

I looked at the clock.

1:52.

I looked back at Josh. He was sitting up, staring at me as my eyes teared up, blurring my vision.I felt his arms wrap around me seconds later, and he was now standing next to me, a worried expression on his face.

"She didn't feel good."

I knew it took a lot to get my dad to take my mother to a doctor. Something was wrong if, one, he took her, and two, he felt the need to tell me about it. I wiped my eyes quickly, Josh pulling me closer.

"They're doing tests. The results should be in next week sometime."

I tried to find my voice, but as I suspected, it was shaky. "Do they think it's serious?"

"They found a tumor."

My heart rate speed up, and I gasped. Josh pulled me even closer, my head on his chest, a phone in my hand.

"Wh-where?" my voice was almost silent.

"Her brain."

The phone fell from my hand, and Josh wrapped his arms around me as I sobbed. I was glad, at that moment more than any, that we were living together. He was here. Josh nudged me, looking at the phone on the floor, my father's voice calling my name, and it echoed through the silent, dark room. I shook my head, pushing off of Josh and hurrying to the bed. I pulled the covers over my head, and I cried. I heard his voice, soft, not wanting to anger my father as he lifted the phone to his ear.
