“No. Freaking. Way!” Em squealed when I finished explaining last nights intriguing conversation. “And you didn’t kiss him?”

“Girl, what is wrong with you?” Jules slapped my arm.

I flinched. “Ow!”

“Delilah Cook, you have been head over heels for Luke Hemmings since you were five years old. Don’t even try to deny it.” She continued when I tried to interrupt and protest my innocence.

I put my head in my hands. “But I left him this morning. After our conversation, in which I told him everything and he told me things too. I left him alone. I am such a terrible person. He will hate me now.”

“And another thing.” Jules said. “Luke Hemmings has been head over heels for you since he was five-and-a-half years old.”

I raised my head to look at her incredulously. “Are you insane? Luke dated Alison Sloan. We are nothing alike. There is obviously something to be said for his ‘type’ here.”

“Shut up.” Jules laughed. “You sound so stupid right now.”

“I’m sorry my mixed up feelings are so amusing to you.” Hurt, I got to my feet and stormed back up the sandy hill, collecting my shoes and phone on the way.

“Hey! Hey! Del! Wait!” Their voices carried back to me.

One eyebrow raised, I turned around to face my friends.

How had our previously perfect afternoon turned so sour?

“I’m sorry.” Jules spread her hands wide. “I didn’t mean it like that…”

“Then how did you mean it?” I snapped. “I don’t like Luke and he doesn’t like me. I’ve hated him for a good four years.”

“And you were best friends for eight years before that.” Jules countered.

Em and Stella stood slightly behind Jules, watching us argue with looks of worry on their faces.

Suddenly, the will to fight left me and I deflated, hunching my shoulders. “I don’t know what to do.” I admitted.

Jules loped over to me and put her arm around my shoulders. “That’s why we’re here, silly.”

Em and Stella joined us, and our afternoon on the beach ended in a group hug.

I didn’t see Luke until that evening, when I was standing in the wings, nervously running over my lyrics.

I’d successfully avoided him through sound check and afterwards. In fact, I hadn’t seen any of the boys.

I caught a glimpse of myself in the floor-length mirror propped against the wall near the tech rack and I checked my appearance self-consciously.

Red flats, white skinny jeans and a black flowy top with a sharp collar. My hair was curled nicely, floating against my shoulders and cascading down my back. I lifted a lock of artificial red and inspected it carefully. I was gonna dye this out ASAP.
