HEY GUYS IT'S AN UPDATE!!!
Sorry it's been so long since I last updated; I honestly never meant for it to be this long; I guess I'm procrastinating ending THD :(
Anyway; enjoy!!! xx
Luke’s older brothers had only two rules for the clubhouse:
1. They were top dogs and what they said, went.
2. No girls allowed.
Luke didn’t really like either of those rules, but being the youngest brother and afraid of a playful punch-up that could potentially ruin his budding good looks, he let the first one go with a disdainful sigh.
But he didn’t appreciate rule number 2.
“Delilah is my best friend.” He’d argue. “We’re almost twins. Where I go, she goes. Where she goes, I go. It’s simple, really.”
Simple enough that he got kicked out of the clubhouse.
Literally.
One of them kicked him straight up the backside and sent him rolling out of the cupboard-under-the-stairs doorway and into the hallway.
I felt only a wave of sympathy. Luke was only trying to please everyone and it hadn’t worked.
“I don’t have to play clubhouse.” I offered, ignoring the little voice that argued against me. “I can come back later, when they’re not so set on it, and we can all play cricket with the neighbours kids.”
“Nah.” Luke grinned at me, gaps poking out where some teeth should be, and were growing through. “I just got booted out for you, the least you could do is hang out with me for it! How gallant was that, eh? Much better than anything Cooper Redruff could do.”
Cooper Redruff was a boy with exceptionally ginger hair and freckled cheeks who had, of late, taken in interest in me.
He was a nice kid, but Luke wasn’t impressed.
I chuckled and assured him that Cooper wasn’t going to be invited to our clubhouse any time soon.
Luke’s blue eyes lit up and I knew he’d just been struck by epic genius.
“We should build our own clubhouse!”
It was the best idea I’d heard all morning.
It was my Dad’s day off, and it didn’t take much convincing to get him to help us build a tree-house from scratch.
Dad had been one of those hands-on kids that had grown up with limited technology and had to scrounge for entertainment ideas.
The tree-house was up in the average sized oak in our front yard, complete with rope ladder, within a week.
It was one small, wonky room that leaned slightly to one side and creaked in the wind, but to Luke and I, it was paradise.
That summer afternoon was perfect; just the two of us starfishing on the slanting floor, staring at the slivers of blue sky peeking through the cracks in the roof and talking about everything and nothing.
At only nine years old, the world was very large, and we had yet to explore any part of it other than our Sydney stomping grounds and my overseas adventure to Disneyland when I was six.
