I gritted my teeth together as I watched the blonde-haired pair walk down the hallway.

I couldn’t bring myself to move, even when they were out of sight.

I leaned against the wall, tilting my head back and steadying my breathing.

Why was it so hard for me to accept that this was what it is?

Because Luke said he liked you, and had done since he was five.

But it’s possible for feelings to change. He liked Alison once too. Maybe he likes both of us now. Maybe he’s confused about his feelings.

Or maybe he just likes Alison and you’re too stubborn to see it.

Yeah, or that.

I didn’t go out of my way to avoid Luke on our second day in Perth, but it just seemed to happen.

The other boys insisted that nothing was going on between Luke and Alison, but because I didn’t see either of them anywhere, I couldn’t truly believe them.

In truth, I think there will always be an insecure little part of me that believed that I was never good enough, and everyone would finally see it.

A teeny weeny part of me even wished for it, just so I could justify the feeling with truth.

But I knew I didn’t truly want it.

I wanted Luke.

And that was why it was so difficult to accept him and Alison hanging out again.

Because I hadn’t wanted anything so badly since wanting my mum back and for Alison to get away from Luke, and once again Alison seemed to have won the unsung battle.

I contemplated my thoughts with a bite of my lip.

“You’re looking uncharacteristically thoughtful.” Ollie said, sarcastically.

I shrugged halfheartedly. “Am I?”

“What’s up, doll?”

I stood up with a sigh, walking away from Ollie. “Luke doesn’t like me talking to you.”

“You can’t be controlled by your boyfriend, Delilah.”

“He’s not my boyfriend.” The words were supposed to be bitter, but they came out with such a degree of hurt that I flinched.

Ollie sighed, getting to his feet and squeezing my shoulder with his large hand. “Sorry, doll. I thought the kid would’ve grown some balls by now.”

“It’s not his fault.” I mumbled, glaring into the empty audience. “It’s Alison’s.”

“That blonde chick that’s always hanging around him like some sort of groupie?”
