Stronger Together

It's over

Sirius led the descent down the stairs, it was unbelievably tempting to call out and see if his best friend was down here and alive but who knew what else could be down there with them. So with Remus backing him up he kept his mouth shut and ears open. Then he felt Remus' breath in his ear.
"There's someone down here." He said in the softest voice he could. Sirius nodded his head in reply.
The basement was quite large, spreading the entire length of the house and the garden so there was plenty of space where Moony, Padfoot and Prongs could run around on the night of the Full Moon. They slowly made their way through the place passing the red velvet sofas and the nicely varnished coffee table. ( all indestructible of course).
Sirius was just beginning to doubt that James and Lily had actually made it down here after all and the small amount of hope he had had at the start of the night was beginning to diminish. Then a streak of green whistled past his head and straight into Remus knocking him to the floor unconscious. Sirius was immediately on the defensive looking in the direction the stunner had come from and stepping in front of Remus' body blocking him from any more potential harm. He stood there waiting for the next spell to come at him, but it never does.
Instead a tall figure came out of the darkness, a figure taller than Sirius but smaller than Remus. The figure is covered in filth and has blood smeared down the side of his face but it doesn't take Sirius two seconds to realise who it is:
James Potter, his brother, alive.
Sirius can't believe it. he rushed forward to greet him to congratulate him on managing to stay alive and scold him for making him and Remus scared shitless and what exactly happened and most importantly where was Lily and Harry and are they safe, and was Voldemort really her and if so where is he, his list of questions were endless. But then James lifted his wand and pointed it directly at him. Sirius stopped dead.
"What was the first thing I told you when you first told me you had started shagging Remus?" He asked. His face was stern and his mouth set into a hard cold line.
"If you do anything on my bed I'll break both your knees and slip Moony love potion so he would pine after Snivellius" Sirius replied with a smile, James lowered his wand and opened his mouth to speak but before he could Sirius pulled him in for a huge brotherly embrace. James hugged him back just as forcefully.
"My God James, I'm sorry I'm so so sorry" Sirius said to James' shoulder.
"You didn't know Padfoot, you couldn't have, none of us did" James' voice was muffled by the other man's jacket.
They stood there embracing each other for a few minutes until Sirius pulled away. he looked his best friend in the eye and he had to ask " is he dead, James, what happened?" James nodded "The bastard tried to get Harry but Lily, she, she stopped him and we did it he just disappeared and his Death Eaters apparated away. Sirius, he's not coming back, we can get on with our lives now. It's finished." The expression on the man's face was enough for Sirius to believe him but he couldn't put into words how relieved he was. they were here alive and ok. He hugged his brother again and then went and crouched down next to the unconscious form of Remus.
"Is he gonna be ok?" James asked, almost fearing the answer.
"He'll be fine, that was an impressive stunner though mate. I can see why Voldemort didn't stand a chance" Sirius said with a smile and James let out a breath. He was about to comment when a voice called from another direction.
"James? Where are you?" Lily Potter stepped out of the darkness, wand in one hand Harry on her opposite hip. She looked about ready to kill anything, and well she already had that night. Then her eyes landed on Sirius.
"Paffoo!" Harry squealed in delight. Lily looked questionably at her husband and he gave her a nod accompanied by a large grin. Lily visibly relaxed. Then she noticed the body on the floor and a look of shock overtook her elegant features. James quickly cut in before Lily got the wrong idea.
"Hey Lily no it's not what you think I just stunned him when I didn't know who he was." Lily sighed with relief. Just then there was a groan from the figure on the floor.
"What hapened?" Remus said, his voice slightly hoarse. Sirius turned his head back round to his boyfriend and smiled brightly,
"It's over Moony, it's all over."
