Can you imagine constantly being the odd one out? Well, that's my life. My name is Alex. I am 14 years old and I live in a town full of heroes, superheroes to be exact. Everyone here is a hero, except for me.
Kids in this town learn how to develop their powers after they turn 13. The month of their 13th birthday (usually the day of), they get a 'sign' that hints at what their powers are going to be. Once everyone in their class has turned 13, they fill out a questionnaire in school. The school uses this to give you mentors that can help you the most. One they have, kids leave school and spend the next 3 years perfecting their powers along with their mentors. Once they turn 16, they can choose from EMR: Enforce: Defeat villains, Mentor: Train kids until they turn 16, or Repair: Treat the enforcers when they get injured, once they turn 17, they leave home.
My only problem is ... I haven't gotten my sign yet. In fact, on my 13th birthday, I lost something more important to me than any power I could ever receive: my family.
It was just like any other day, my mom and dad had set out to defeat another villain. Only this time, they never returned. I never found out exactly what happened to them, but sometimes, I wonder if ignorance is bliss.
Now, I'm all alone. My sister turned 17 and left me here. I remember that day, the day that she left. I woke up, and I couldn't find her. I looked throughout the entire house, and she was gone. I was alone. When I looked in her room, I noticed the drawing that she had on her wall. It was an old drawing, one that I drew when I was little. It was of our family, all together.I took that picture out of her room and hung it on my wall. It's still there today. It's comforting. Now, she's off mentoring some other kids. Kids that aren't me. I know that the day I receive my sign will be the day that I know what I'm supposed to do, the day that I know who I'm supposed to be. I can't wait to be super.
