Chapter 4

I heard a bunch of yells and snarls and growling, but I couldn’t see anything. There was smoke hanging all around me that was so think it was almost tangible. I ran around trying to look for some way out, but there was nothing. Right as I was about to give up, the smoke began to clear a bit and I saw someone standing there. It looked to be a gut about my age. The smoke was still too thick to see who it was, but I could see enough to know he was very attractive. I found myself running towards him and embracing him so that my face was buried in his chest. I began to cry and I heard a voice try to sooth me as they rubbed my back. I felt comfort in his arms and his voice was a sweet lullaby to my ears as he kissed the top of my head. Then I felt the man holding me to fade. I opened my eyes to see what was happening, but the man was gone. Tears began to form in my eyes at his sudden disappearance.

I walked some more, desperate to find a way out. Soon, I saw two birds. One looked to be a baby and the other older. Somehow I knew that that older bird was the father. They were flying around in circles happily, and I admired the view. I was begging to feel myself relax a bit more, until suddenly the father bird swooped down and attacked the baby. He kept striking until the baby bird fell limply on the ground, broken and bloodied.

I woke up to Rowen’s pushing against my shoulder.

“Hey you ok there Scarlet?” Rowen asked concerned. I just gave a feeble nod and I stared around groggily at the surrounding around us.  We were parked in an area almost completely surrounded by the woods, except for the dirt roadway that reached far past the trees. I noticed the Jeep the boys were riding in was parked next to us and empty.

“Looks like the boys beat us. Figures after all the speeding Logan was doing on the freeway.” Rowen announced.

In front of us was a giant mansion that could hands down be the biggest building I have ever seen. It was mostly made out of wood, with the occasional rocks in certain areas. The mansion had about seven river stone chimneys that I could see just looking from the front of. All in all, this place was amazing.

“Please don’t tell me you actually live here. I mean, this is way too fancy and expensive looking for a few teenagers to be able to afford.” I said while looking over at Rowen and Abigail.

“Please. As if everyone could live here. They wish.” Abigail scoffed, almost looking offended.

“Well lets go on inside” Rowen suggested, sounding a little exhausted. “Abigail, can you show Scarlet around? I really need to get some sleep or I will drop dead.”

“Please. Do I look like her freaking babysitter? Besides, I have more important things to do with my precious time.” And with that, Abigail stormed off into the house, leaving us behind with our mouths opened. Could she get any ruder! Does she think I am here of my own free will just to annoy her?

“Ok don’t take this personally, but that girl needs a serious attitude adjustment. Otherwise my fists will do it for her.” I said with strong annoyance. I am not normally a violent person, not to mention she could probably knick my ass, but she is just so nasty.

Rowen began to let out a small giggle. “Don’t take it personally; she just likes to keep her distance from others. She isn’t what you would call a people person.” Suddenly Rowen turned towards me. “But what I said earlier is true. I am really tired from all that driving, I am going to head to my room. Maybe you can wait a few hours for a tour?”

“No it’s ok. I can just wonder around and get my bearings on my own.” I said quickly. I honestly just wanted to keep myself busy after everything. Plus that dream was still giving me the creeps.

“You sure?” Rowen asked and I nodded in response. “Ok then, just be careful and don’t get lost. Here let me at least take your bag up to your room.” Before I could even protest, Rowen snatched my bag and headed for the house. On the way, Rowen turned her head over her shoulder and yelled, “By the way, there is a small town area behind the house, just follow the path.”And with that, she disappeared into the house.

Right, so it looks like I am on my own. I had thought about exploring the mansion first, but figured I would spend most of my time in there, and headed to the town Rowen talked about.

It took about fifteen minutes or so walking on the path. I was a soft dirt path, and was surrounded by gigantic trees. When I reached the town, it was as if I had taken a step back in time. It reminded me of those little towns in the olden days, where people lived in cabin like houses, and there were markets on the street. Only, it was a bit more modern then those times. People were everywhere, carrying on with their daily schedules.

It was cute and heartwarming. A smile splayed across my lips, and I began to walk around the market. I would stop and look around at stands that caught my attention. After about an hour of walking around, I heard a familiar voice.

“What the hell are you doing here by yourself?” The disapproving voice said sternly. I turned around to see Logan towering over me, arm crossed over his chest and a scowl deforming his handsome face.

I took a quick breath in from the shock, and yelled internally at myself to make my mouth move and the pounding of my heart to stop.

“And why by yourself!” He practically yelled. “This place maybe safer than your home, but that doesn’t mean you can just go around everywhere as you please without someone with you! Do you have any idea what worry and trouble it would cause if something bad happened to you?” I wouldn’t be surprised if smoke came out of his ears he was that angry.

But I wasn’t about to let some guy talk to me like I was a defenseless little girl. “Well I am fine.” I said back just as angry. “And why does it matter to you so much that I get hurt! I don’t even know why I am here!”

A look of shock took over Logan’s face, and his gorgeous eyes softened a bit more. He opened his mouth and looked ready to tell me something, but his face soon gained control and he turned cold once more. “Because, you may just prove to be very important soon.” I was about to ask what exactly, but he turned and said, “Just go back to the house and don’t come out again without someone with you. Think you can handle that?” He turned, and walked away leaving me there confused, angry, and a bit hurt.

On my way back to the mansion, I stomped the whole way and kept wondering why Logan was so rude to me. He didn’t even let me explain myself. I should have just given him a piece of my mind, but I always got so nervous around him.

I got to the back of the mansion, where I noticed a beautiful garden with every type of flower you could think of, and what looked to be a maze at the end. Around the garden, there were several benches scattered around. As I looked, I noticed Damian sitting on one of them looking at the few clouds in the sky.

I decided to walk over and give him some company. I thought I would have some fun and scare Damian. I crept up behind, with my footsteps making a whisper of a noise, and just as I was about to scare him, he suddenly turned around and screamed while grabbing me.

I let out a small yelp, and burst out into laughter, which then caused Damian to laugh with me. After a while of laughing, I took a breath and asked, “How did you know I was behind you? I was really quiet.”

“Ha are you kidding! You weren’t quiet; you sounded like an elephant in a stampede.” Damian joked, giving me a huge smile. I playfully punched his arm, though he didn’t flinch at all.

“Well you cheated because of your werewolf powers.” I proclaimed while we both took a seat on the bench again.

“Hey, I didn’t cheat; I just used my amazing skills to sense you.” Damian said in protest. I stuck my tongue out at him because I am that mature.

After we laughed a little more at my amazing come back, Damian looked at me solemnly. His hazel eyes boring into my brown ones. “Hey Scarlet, I have to ask you a question. Do you think…”

Damian was suddenly interrupted by a load howl, and next thing I knew, Damian had turned into a wolf and was being charged by a big, brown one, with big grey eyes and flecks of yellow.
