I always struggled to wake up in the morning for school, but not today. I was excited, I'd like to say for school work and a lovely 20 minute walk to school, but no. I just wanted to see Luke. Something about him was intriguing, maybe it was his deep, Australian voice or the way he held my arm to make sure I didn't fall over, whilst keeping eye contact with me to double check I was alright. He seemed mysterious, I wanted to find out why.
On my walk to school I started to panic. This was difficult for me, a new school, new people and new teachers. I realised how much people didn't know about me, I'm a stranger to them. What if I scare people off? I don't want to do that. Yesterday was a bit of a blur, I only went to three lessons because the rest of the time was spend organising my timetable for my lessons and the head master explaining things to me. The lessons I went to were English, Science and History. In English I sat next to a petite brunette girl called Issy, I think? In Science I was by a blonde guy (who I don't know the name of) and a girl called Charlotte, and they were really nice. In History I sat next to Charlotte again, and we spoke a little bit and she told me a bit about the town and school.
A person next to me distracted me from my thoughts.
"Hello" A male voice exclaimed. I turned my head quickly and I was met by unruly brown hair and some dark hazel eyes.
"Oh my goodness, you made me jump!" I said, continuing to walk down the pavement.
"My apologises, I'm Edward, but you can call me Ed" the boy said, sticking his hand out in front of him, which I took gently and shook.
"I'm Carmen, you go to Hartly High right? I think I saw you in my English lesson" He was really easy to speak too, and I'm glad.
"Yeah! You're the new girl, aren't you?"
Have people been speaking about me? "Yeah I am actually, I've recently moved from America"
"I can tell from that great accent of yours"
"Oh yeah, bit of a give away isn't it" I said with my cheeks growing a light shade of pink.
By that time we'd reached the front gates to the school premises. Ed took a step in front of me and I had to crane my neck up to look at him, he must be at least 5"10.
"See you in English" He said with a smile and a wink, before walking down the hall and into one of the classrooms.
Well I wasn't expecting that to say the least, why would a nice guy like him take interest in speaking to little me? As I continued to walk to my form room I checked my timetable, and I actually had art first, English second. I smiled a little remembering the little conversation I had minutes ago.
"Carmen!" I head an excitable cry come from inside the room. I looked up and saw Emma running towards me with her arms open, and took me into a warm embrace, taking me by surprise.
"Oops, sorry, do you like hugs?" she said to me, taking a step back and holding my shoulders at arms length.
"It's fine" I said with a smile.
"My mum always tells me I need to be less affectionate to people as not everyone likes them, but I personally think they're lovely" she said with an innocent grin upon her face. Calum came up behind her and stood protectively next to her, linking his fingers through hers. I'm sure he liked her affection, her quick hug was actually quite nice. "same" I reply, and nod with a smile.
"So, have you met anyone? Made some friends? Oh my gosh, any of the boys take your interest?"
Luke came to mind and I had to try and avoid my cheeks turning a burning crimson.
"Met a few, Charlotte and Edward..." I replied sheepishly.
"Aw they're both lovely! Edward's hot isn't he?" That earned a jokey glare from Callum, they obviously trust each other a lot. "That's it? surely you'd have met some of the other guys, they're always in the hallways, they're quite intimidating sometimes actually, they always hang about in the corridor. I don't think they mean to be though" She rambled on, I guess I better tell her about Luke. Maybe he's one of those guys.
"Luke"
Calum's head snapped up and his eyes averted away from Emma. "Luke Hemmings?"
"Um yeah probably, he just told me his first name" Is there something wrong with that?
"I'd stay away from him if I were you." He replied bluntly. Emma shoved his shoulder gently and then stood on her tiptoes and whispered something inaudible into his ear. When she set her heels back on the ground he turned to me again.
"Well... he's just a bit different"

Sorry it's short but I wanted to update and I've been busy with school stuff recently :(
btw the inspiration for the title is from the meaning of 'Luke' which is 'light', and it'll obviously has some reference in the story later on :)
