Chapter One - Dr. Bellwood's Offer
I floated in and out of consciousness. A few times I would come to, there would be people in my room. They whispered amongst themselves but I caught bits and pieces of what they were saying.
"No where else to go...doesn't know...Dr. Bellwood..."
One time, I'd heard Dr. Bellwood himself standing above my bed. There was a nurse standing with him and they were engaged in a conversation. I could hear everything clearly.
"She has no idea what her body is going through. Her body isn't responding the way it should to the change. I'm afraid that if she doesn't change by the end of the month, she might not make it." Dr. Bellwood's voice was solemn.
Change? What did he mean by change?
"What do we do with her Alpha? She has no family left." the nurse's voice sounded like an elder woman.
"I'll think of something. In the mean time let's give her her last dose of tranquilizers and when she wakes up we can talk with her about it." Dr. Bellwood's voice was soothing. It gave me an eerie feeling of calm.
Moments later, I was drifting into the familiar dark waters of unconsciousness.
"Charlotte dear, can you hear me?"
My eyebrows furrowed as the soft voice registered in my foggy mind. Who was that?
"Charlotte, if you can hear me I need you to wake up." The voice was close to my ear. It sounded like a mans.
My mind drifted to a distant memory of mine. It was my father and I. We were strolling down the sidewalk on a hot summer day with melting ice cream cones in our hands. Daddy had led us to the park were we sat on our favorite bench.
"Charlie, look. Do you see that bird?" Daddy pointed towards the sky as soon as we were seated. I quickly jerked my head towards the sky and squinted into the sun. Sure enough there was a small blue bird floating in the gentle wind.
"It's called a Mocking jay," Daddy explained, "and it's the most carefree, happy bird there is."
I giggled and took a lock of my cone. Daddy was grinning too.
"You're like a mocking jay Charlie. You know that?"
I looked up at my father, the man that I shared a gene with, the man that scared away the monsters at night, my hero. He was the most perfect father anyone could ever ask for.
I looked down at my ice cream cone for a moment but when I looked up, I was in a totally different place.
I was in the backseat of my parents car.
"Charlie, please stop kicking the back of Daddy'a seat." Mommy scolded lightly.
I instantly stopped, hanging my head in shame. Daddy looked at me from the rear view mirror.
"Char, smile for Daddy."
I couldn't help but giggle when my Daddy made a silly face. He always knew how to make me smile.
But the moment of true bliss was interrupted by my mother'a strangled scream.
"Anthony!"
It was too late to swerve and miss the giant semi coming straight for us. My eyes met my Daddy's in the mirror. Right before the impact, he opened his mouth and screamed my name.
