i asked alexandria to be my girlfriend that morning after our "camping trip". she said yes.
i remember march very well because that was the month alexandria lost her father to cancer. i know, a doctor dying of a sickness? i never knew because she hadn't told me until the tragedy actually happened.
i was constantly at her house, or her dorm room missing classes to take care of her, and to wipe her tears. i would make her soup, and give her baths. it's not that she wasn't capable of doing these things herself, it's the fact that i knew she wouldn't if i didn't step in and take control.
her dad had been battling cancer a few years before that, and i guess his body just couldn't handle much more.
"come on, alexandria. you need to eat something," i would say.
"no, luke." she would muffle her words in her pillows.
this is literally what march consisted of, everyday.
st. patricks day rolled around and i had finally convinced alexandria to go to my parents' place with me for dinner. we had slight irish culture in our family and to please my grandparents, my family would take on the tradition to a yearly dinner on the 17th of march.
my house was as average as the next. two story white house with a white door. four bedrooms and two bathrooms. it wasn't much, but it was home.
we walked up to the front door, and like the first time me and alexandria hung out, she hooked her fingers in my belt loop. i kissed her cheek in reassurance and opened the door, not bothering to knock.
"hey, mom!" i shouted as i walked towards her and gave her a warm hug.
"who's this?" she asked sweetly as she looked over to alexandria. she blushed and introduced herself, hugging my mom too.
my dad then came in, and the process was basically a clone of the previous introduction. my two brothers were there too, and jack was playfully flirting with her, which caused me to tackle him. ben joined in too, but since they were so muscular i lost terribly.
in that moment, alexandria laughed for the first time in two and a half weeks. that made me very happy.
my mom made delicious lasagna that night. alexandria sat beside me, my mom and dad each at the end of the table, and ben and jack in front of us.
my mom told alexandria about our culture, and she seemed very interested. i knew she would feel rude if she didn't eat, so she did. i didn't care if that's the only reason she ate. as long as she did. it made me happy.
jack talked to us about his new job as a teacher, teaching math like mom. alexandria always told me she wanted to be a teacher. a kindergarten teacher. i thought that was cute, and the job would fit her perfectly. her and jack talked about that, her asking questions about it all, and him answering them.
the bonding time i spent with my family and alexandria made me happy.
after dinner, and me and alexandria ended up crashing there because my parents sure did know how to drain the energy out of us.
i gave alexandria a pair of my boxers and a t-shirt to wear for bed, which i knew was her favorite. all i wore was my boxers and a pair of basketball shorts. we laid down and i pulled her head onto my chest and wrapped my arm around her waist, the way its been for almost three weeks.
we talked a lot that night. she told me how much she loved spending time with my family, and i told her she was beautiful when she smiled. that made her smile.
after awhile, a comfortable silence surrounded us.
she fell asleep almost instantly and i knew she was slowly but surely getting better.
