You blink lethargically, the lingering draughts of sleep escaping as you break the cold waking world. Your body feels stiff and achy, every movement sending dull pain singing up your spine. Your head felt as if it were filled with cotton, leaving you woozy and disoriented. Perplexed, you frown and attempt to shake the cobwebs from your memory as you gingerly sit up to absorb your surroundings...

The shrill pitch of cicadas filled the cool, crisp air of the woods. The moist, compact soil on which you rested cushioned your sore body generously. Towering pine trees, elm, evergreen and more surrounded you in an endless sea of reaching branches, almost skeletal in the lurking gloom. Far above you, the glorious ink black night sky glittered with hundreds of constellations; stars gleaming like shattered diamonds in ebony. Shadows boiled and curled in the distant unknown territory beyond you, the harrowing hoot of an owl echoing in the distance.

How the heck did I get here?!

Bothered by your lack of recollection, you cautiously eased to your feet –heedful of the wild world you were lost in. The woods on the outskirts of town were basically dubbed a real life 'forbidden forest'. All down to a few strange disappearances throughout the years, though most laid it down to just rumours running rampant.
However, those rumours almost carried a new light to you now when you were stranded in the middle of this godforsaken place. Just about anything could lurk in this place. Bears, wolves, vampires...

Wait, vampires?!

You shook your head at the idea of a fanged fool lurking around thirsty for your blood. Clearly, your imagination was getting the best of you. You contemplated the chances of someone finding you if you stayed put. Someone must have noticed you were missing by now. Perhaps your dorm mate? But, then again, she could be off at some party since you did say you'd be locking up at work.

Either way, remaining where you were and avoiding winding up getting even more lost than you currently was seemed like the intelligent thing to do. However, you hastily scrapped the plan when the dry snap of twigs resounded from somewhere behind you aggravating your paranoia.

You'd take your chances with the vampire.

Still wobbly on your feet, you paved forwards, ignoring the darts of pain followed by bites of numbness through your body as you forced it to move. A miscellaneous of debris littered the floor; acorns, pine needles, dry leaves and protruding roots all crunched beneath your feet. You winced at every sound, desperately wishing you did not possess the grace of a drunken elephant. Branches snagged at your thin uniform and tugged at your mop of hair, the chilly air making you shiver as a sense of suspicion compressed your lungs.

Someone was watching you.

Tentatively, you rubbed the back of your neck. Every muscle bunched, every nerve zapped with tension. The smothering feeling of being stalked like prey hounded you. And no it wasn't because you were crazy, it was because your instincts were on high alert for any danger. You had become accustomed to following them in your tumultuous life and you saw no reason why they would fail you now.

Which meant you needed to get the hell out of here.

Suddenly a loud thud sounded behind you and you whipped around, facing the predator brazenly even as your insides squirmed.

That's when you met him.

He reared up before you, an intimidating height that left you feeling puny and helpless. His build resembled that of a football player, strapping and broad-shouldered beneath his dull yellow jacket –the collar popped up to protect his neck. Dark blue jeans clad his long legs, brown leather gloves shielding his hands. But what fascinated you most was the white mask painted with intricate female features in black, disguising his identity. A cap of silky light brown hair fell across the mask in a tousled do, his feet shifting in crimson stained sneakers as he watched her.
