Chapter One

Chapter 1 

"Get up Adam" I kick my older brother in his side, "we can't stay here any longer the second mass is still on the move if we want to catch up you've got to get off your lazy ass"

Adam groans as he rolls over to his side his dark hair falling into his face, he really needs a haircut it's grown so long these past months. He looks completely different now, nothing like he used to, with his all-American captain of the football team short haircut. I kick him again, you would think an alien invasion would cure him of his tendency to sleep in but no Adam treasures his beauty sleep. I was obviously getting nowhere with this particular tactic so I decided it was time for plan b, operation code name 'water-blast'. I grab my canteen and run down to the nearby creek as fast as I can considering I am carrying all my belongings in my back. To be fair though that's not as much as you would think. My backpack contains only the bare essentials I had long ago come to the conclusion that my freedom was worth just a bit more then a few changes of clothes and deodorant. My sleeping bag a change of clothes my trusty canteen, pocket knife and medical supplies were now all I had to survive, oh and of course my gun no joke I probably love that gun more then I do some people.

The water was freezing at the creek I could see a few ice chunks floating in it, damn Boston, I use to love the cold weather here it was an excuse to cozy up by the fire and read, now it was just an inconvenience. I quickly fill up my canteen and run back up the bank to my sleeping brother.

 "Adam" I say in my super sweet butterflies and rainbows voice, "last chance big bro, we can still do this the easy way"

 He just groaned and rolled away from the sound of my voice. Fine I have no other choice. I start to pour out the contents of my canteen right onto his face. His blue eyes snap open he and I really do look alike same dark hair and blue eyes the real difference right now is that he is looking at me like he's about to commit a murder.

 "What the fuck Ava!" he screams jumping out of his sleeping bag and wiping down his wet face with it 

"Don't get you panties in a twist Adam it's only water" I reply casually he still looks livid

 "The bloody sun isn't even up? Do you really think the second mass is traveling right now?"

 Now I'm angry I know he's only saying this because he's tired but its still pisses me off,

 "No you asshole, I don't but what I do know is that we will never catch up if we go by your beauty sleep schedule. So get your ass in gear. If you remember we are kinda carrying life saving stuff here and it's not gonna do any good if we have no one to help!" 

He looks guilty, "Yeah I know, I'm sorry but this is so ridiculous we have never had to track down a settlement as fast moving as the second mass they must never sleep it's amazing for a group of that size!"

I smile at him, "I know but doesn't it make it more exciting imagine all the kids they have probably saved"

 He nudges my shoulder smiling affectionately at me, "You're a badass Ava I don't think we would have made it to half the settlements if it wasn't for that drive"

 I smile at the compliment they are a rare thing from Adam so I try and soak this one up,

 "We make a good team I think,” I say as I start to pick up the pace walking faster along the faint trail the second mass has left behind.
