Chapter Four
'Woah woah woah Benny boy straight to business hey?" I say squirming away from his hands as they trace up my spine looking for any spikes
"No spikes Hal" he says to the brown haired boy
"Alright so now that you've realized we're no threat can you, for lack of a better term 'take us to your leader?'" Adam says to Hal smirking as he pulls out of his grasp and moves over to where me and Ben are standing.
"Well as far as the threat is concerned we still know nothing about you. You seem harmless though," Hal says looking at me with a smirk, "well harmless enough to take back to base at least"
I tilt my head to the side it would seem this 'Hal' is a bit up himself. I'm trying not to remind him of how I just took down one of his men. Somehow I don't think challenging him will get me on his good side.
"Sir yes Sir" I say with a mock salute, he winks at me
"Follow us," he commands walking ahead as we follow behind navigating our way through the trees
"So if you didn't hear before I'm Adam," my brothers says as he sticks out his hand to Ben, who shakes as he replies
"Yeah good to meet you I'm Ben and that guy" he says pointing to Hal, "that's my brother Hal Mason"
Suddenly a pretty blonde girl walks up beside us,
"I'm Maggie" she smiles at us "sorry about before we're not exactly use to taking the welcoming role if you know what I mean"
"Fair enough we've experienced much worse believe me" I reply nudging Adams shoulder "I remember one time this guy got us stuck in a basement for three days for cracking a joke, from then on we decided I should probably do most of the talking
Maggie laughs, "What did you say?" she asks Adam
"I've been sworn to secrecy" he replies, "lets just say there was a misunderstanding and I may have unwittingly called the New York base leaders wife a skitter lookalike"
Maggie looks impressed and I can see curiosity in Ben's eyes he glances over at me.
"You guys sure get around a lot, New York is a decent journey" Ben states dubiously, I smile at him he seems smart and I like that, he knows that we're not your run in the mill homeless teenagers. His eyes give him away he's studying us I can almost see the cogs in his brain turning trying to make sense of us.
"Yeah we've travelled a bit it's kind of necessary in our line of work" I can't help but tease him with that little bit of information I can't tell these guys exactly what we do it might cause trouble I have to talk to their leaders, but I can already tell Ben is going to go all out to figure it out. He's looking at me after my comment but I feel like he's looking straight through me trying to get inside my head. He soon turns away and continues to walk a little bit ahead us. I notice Maggie and Adam have started their own conversation and I'm free to take in my surroundings.
The forest is becoming less dense the further we walk. I am beginning to hear the first sounds of a camp, it sounds similar to the countless other settlements Adam and I have visited but there's something different, the smell. I can't quite place it at first it's been what feels like a lifetime since I last smelt it. It's disinfectant, a hospital smell and all of a sudden as we emerge from the forest it becomes apparent why it's there. The second mass is camped out at a hospital and from the smell of things it's fully stocked just their luck.
"Welcome to the second mass" Maggie says sweeping her arm out as if presenting it to us; I can't help but smile it's nice to be around people again,
