"What is the nature of your presence?" Was what I heard before I even stepped foot upon the threshold of Lynne Spears' home. I knew this was a bad idea.
A stiff police officer with an uninviting gaze blocked my entrance of the residence.
"Should I repeat myself once more?" The officer folded his arms, badgering me.
A shiny name plate reflected a blinding light from the sun. Martins was imprinted into my vision.
"I'm here to see Lynne. I have some information I'd like to input." I attempted to sound professional.
The officer didn't buy it. "Just because you're a big 'celebrity'," he used air quotes. "-Doesn't mean you have the right to everyone's private business. I'm going to have to ask you to vacate the property immediately." He began to shut the door in my face.
"Wait, I-" I stammered.
"Good day, sir." He slammed the glossy wooden door violently.*
Ring!
An almost ear splitting noise broke the cold silence that occupied my apartment.
My eyes glanced from the rough carpeted floor to the ceiling, the phone perched atop a shelf in the corner of my eye, then back to the floor.
I almost forgot that there was an incoming call for a second until an abrupt "ring!" once again reminded me to pick up the phone.
I shifted my gaze to the caller ID, to find out that it was a blocked number.Slowly retrieving the phone from its place on the shelf, I wondered who this stranger was and why they requested correspondence between us.
"Hello?" I asked slowly.
"It's a mistake." A raspy male voice whispered into the receiver.
"Who is this?"
"It's a mistake!" The goose-bump inflicting tone repeated. I jumped up from my couch and peered through the blinds of my window.
"Uh.. I don't know who you are, and what mistake you're referring to-"
He chuckled. "You know exactly who I am, Justin. And you definitely know what mistake I'm talking about."
*click*
Just to hear the sharp voice spinning around my head sent chills down my spine.
I had no idea who it was, and I didn't know what "mistake" he was talking about.
Maybe it was just a prank call. Just a joke.
I gradually worked my way back down onto the sofa again, placed the phone a distance away from me, and wiped my sweaty palms on my jeans.
Just a joke.
A very funny joke.I picked up the phone again and punched in Lynne's number quickly.
She picked up on the first ring.
"Hey, Justin, what's up?"
"Uh, is it alright if I come over?"
"Honey, you don't need permission. You know you're always welcome over here!"
"Well earlier someone stopped me-" I sort of trailed off
Lynne scoffed. "Jamie! I need to tell him to stop turning our guests away!"
"No, no. It was a police officer." I corrected her.
"A police officer?" Lynne's voice appeared puzzled.
"Yeah."
"I didn't have any police officers here today, in fact, not in about 3 weeks."
"Well, there was one there that told me to vacate the property this morning when I tried to talk to you."
"I was at the bank earlier, actually. When I came back, no one was there. Honey, are you sure-"
"Believe me, Lynne. I saw it with my own two eyes."
"I trust you. Come over now and we'll talk about it."I arrived a short while later.
"Do you suppose we call the LAPD about this?" Lynne countered.
"Let's try the non-emergency number.""LAPD non emergency how may I assist you?" A brisk voiced lady picked up.
"Hi my name is Lynne Spears and I am calling in regards to a visit at my home by one of your officers."
"What is the address?" The woman asked.
"1234 Los Angeles Way."
"Can I put you on hold for just a second?"
"Sure thing."
Lynne paced back and forth through the kitchen, still pressing the phone against her red ear.
I decided not to speak a word considering her state of angst.
"Alrighty, well it seems to be that our records say that no one from our department visited a 1234 Los Angeles Way today, ma'm."
"Are you sure? Because one of my visitors told me that you had someone down here about 3 hours ago."
"I've checked all of our credentials that pertain to officer visits, ma'm. We have a clear record of visits for your home, and today isn't one of them."
Lynne tapped me on the shoulder and cradled the phone in her arm away from us.
"What was the officer's name? Do you remember?" She whispered.
I remembered back to that morning. The fiery sun reflected off his name plate.
Martins.
"Martins, I think. "
"We have no officer working here by the name of Martins, m'am."
Lynne started to panic. "I am afraid that a trespasser has intruded into my home. What do I do?"
"We need actual surveillance or evidence otherwise we cannot create further investigation."
Lynne gulped and hung up abruptly."Time to find out who greeted you today."
