I woke up a while late and was surprised. I hadn't even remembered falling asleep. I glanced at my clock and blinked in surprise. 1 a.m. already? What had woken me up? Something had. I just had that feeling. I laid there for a few moments, listening. Then I heard it. A tap tap tap noise coming from the window. My eyes widened in fear. I grabbed the first sharp thing I saw, which happened to be a pencil. I know. Not a very good weapon, but stabbing it in someone's eye would stop them. I clutched the pencil in my hand behind my back and slowly got up. When I got to the window I took a deep breath and slowly pulled the blinds up. My eyes widened and my mouth opened to scream, but nothing came out. There, on the little ledge outside my window, was a guy. I had no clue who he was, but he was young, had a buzz cut of blond hair, and baby blue eyes. "Don't scream." He pleaded, though his words were muffled through the glass. Even if I had wanted to I couldn't scream. My throat had frozen up. "Relax. Please calm down. I swear I'm not gunna hurt you. I'm hear to talk about what happened at the park today." He pleaded grasping the window sill so he wouldn't fall. My eyes widened in shock. He knew? How did he know? Who was this guy? "Who are you?" I choked out. "Private Gavin Collins of the U.S. Army. " He answered in a very strict, no-non sense tone. Army? Wow. "Start explaining." I said, finding my voice. "Um, would you mind opening the window. It's hard to hear you." He said motioning to the glass. I bit my lip, but I could help it. I had to know. I slowly click the locks open and pushed open the window. Suddenly the saying, "Curiosity killed the cat" floated through my mind. I brushed off the thought. I had to know. I pulled out the screen and sat it on the floor. The army guy, Gavin, pulled himself up and swung his legs inside the window. He didn't actually come in. He just sat on the window sill with his feet on the floor. I moved further away, just out of... habit I guess and sat down on the edge of my bed. "Look, I can't really explain this, but there are people who can. I need you to come with me." He said. I gave him my best- what the hell- look. "You honestly expect me to go with you? What proof do I have that you're not some phyco killer?" I asked him in an incredulous voice gaining my nerve back. His face stayed stony, but his eyes looked anxious. "I can't explain, but..." He trailed off glancing behind him. "What?" I asked sharply. He motioned me over to the window. After a moments hesitation I got up and slowly made my way over. He pointed down to the driveway below. He moved over so I could see. There sitting in the driveway was the same truck from earlier. The huge black one. Okay what the hell is going on? I thought to myself. My mouth seemed to make up my mind for me. "Alright." I said. Private Gavin blinked in surprise as if he hadn't expected me to agree so easily. "Let me change first." I said after a glance down at my rumpled t-shirt and baggy shorts. He nodded and slipped out the window. I wondered how he was going to get down until I noticed a ladder standing off the the side against my ledge. He slipped down it as I closed my window. I could not believe what I was doing. But I was doing it. I walked in to my closet and grabbed my favorite pair of boot cut jeans, my white sneakers, a white t-shirt with a butterfly on the bottom, and a black jacket. I threw everything on and opened my window again. I didn't have to worry about my parents or my sister because they all were sound sleepers and knew better than to wake me before noon during summer, less they face my wrath. I grabbed my phone and shoved it into my pocked, then I climbed out onto the ledge and closed my window behind me. I glanced down to see Private Gavin holding the bottom of the ladder. I twisted around and slowly climbed down. Heights sometimes freaked me out so I refused to look down. When I got to the bottom I hopped off and turned to look at the truck. It was too dark out for me to see it very well, but I knew it was the same truck. It still didn't feel right. Gavin quickly walked over and opened the passenger side door for me. I bit my lip, almost scared to get close. Gavin nodded. "It's alright." He said calmly. I swallowed hard and walked up, grabbing the handle and hauling myself up into the seat. "Where exactly are we going?" I asked Gavin as he slid in and started to back out. "Downtown. The Harpen Building." He answered simply. Harpen building? That must be the name of the new place they had just built on the outskirts of downtown Houston. Supposedly it was some kind of government building. I chewed on my lip in silence, contemplating just what the hell could be going on. "How old are you?" I blurted out to fill the silence. He looked too young to be in the military. He laughed and said, "I'm nineteen. I joined the army the second I turned 18." He answered as if reading my mind. I didn't say anything else. I couldn't think of anything else to say. My mind had gone completely into overdrive. I had so many possible explanations in my head, it might have exploded. We would be at our destination in about twenty minutes if there was no traffic, so I would find out the truth soon enough.
