"Mom I love you and I'll be fine, I promise." I hugged my mom and then studied the progress made. I somehow got a co-ed dorm, so that would be interesting. Although sleeping with a dude in a place I'm unfamiliar with can be strange. Lost in thought, my mom pulled me on the twin bed and then began to speak intently.
"You know I remember when I went to college, I felt like such a free spirit. No parents, no rules, no one yelling at me to wake up." My mom stifled a laugh and then continued, "But I never let what I was comfortable with and what was right get mixed up."
"Valerie, I'm trying the best I can to let you go and be your own woman, but you're my baby. You're so strong and independent. I know that Austin was a big part of your life, but try and have fun. I mean its college, you only go once. As long as you know your morals I encourage you to be the best you can be in whatever you wish to pursue. It's a fresh start here, just don't forget your roots."
She stopped talking and then got lost in thought for a second. "Mom, I love you. I'm so grateful for what you've taught me and I appreciate what you've done to get me here." I squeezed her as if it was the last time I would see her, because you never know these days.
For the next couple of hours me and my mom piled around the campus and then said our goodbye's. Goodbye's can be one of the most difficult things to even begin to express to someone. You never know when you'll physically see them again.
On my first day of College, it wasn't as bad as I thought. I had good classes, a good schedule, and even made a few friends. I made plans to go out to this weird, on campus, cafe with two girls by the name of Taylor and Kelsie, and a guy named Ralph. I met them in Chemistry and English, ironic how much our classes all coincided.
"So Valerie how was high school back home? Any special guy waiting for you there?" Ralph asked a bit curiously as him and I stood in line for a smoothie. "Um, not currently. I think I've given up dating for a while anyways, I need some me time." I said and then pushed thoughts of Austin out of my brain. "Yeah, I feel you. I had a girl who was so manipulative it was crazy what she did to me. But remember this, never let your past consume you. I've seen way too many people let past shit still continue to hurt them." Ralph replied and smiled as we went back to the table with Taylor and Kelsie.
As the night went on with laughter and story telling, I began to get anxious as to who my roommate was. I mean dorming with a dude is so weird, I hope he isn't abusive or anything. I hope he's like really unattractive so it won't build any sexual tension, although I'm not very pretty so that would never happen, haha.
As I opened the door to my dorm I see this gigantic man-boy sitting on the bed opposite of mine, reading a book. "Hi, Anthony Davis." He chirped and then stood up shaking my hand. He was almost 7 feet tall, had a genuine smile, an interesting unibrow, and caramel skin. I smiled lightly and then greeted him, "Hi, I'm Valerie Simpson. Quite a lovely brow there, very unique."
"Its sort of a trademark for me, aha. But hey, glad you dig it."
"Let me guess, you play basketball?"
"Is it because I'm black?" He said with a serious tone of voice.
"No, no I'm sorry. You're just really tall, and I thought, I don't know. Sorry." I said with the words fumbling out of my mouth and then taking a seat on my bed. "Valerie I was just messing with you." He said and then burst out laughing. "This is gonna be one long semester." I sighed and then looked up at Anthony. "Long like my dick." He mumbled sarcastically and then got under the covers.
Beep.
Beep.
Beep.
"Whaaa ..?" I said extremely confused and drowsy. "Anthony, dude, its like 5 am. Why did you set an alarm this early?" I said and then rolled over to face his bed. I saw him as he hopped up and then changed into some basketball shorts and a t-shirt. "Early workout with the team. Opportunity doesn't sleep, so neither do I. Gotta go." He said and then sprinted out the doorway.
I hate basketball players and their constant need to improve. I mean I admire it greatly, but I see no reason in why people need to wake up in the early am's just to sprint or shoot around. Seriously, was gym class not enough for them? I'm partially just bashing on them because Austin, I know.
I layed in my bed for a good hour and still couldn't go back to sleep, so I finished organizing the odds and ends in my room and then took a shower. I had a class at noon so that gave me plenty of time. I had a feeling today would be an adventure with a hint of pain in the ass.
