Alice's eyes widened. So he did know that kid! She nodded numbly. What the hell was going on? "I also bet he scared you, and said something to make you avoid me, right?" He nailed it.

"What the fuck is going on?!" She asked, frustrated. She knew something was happening. Something that most likely had to do with her.

Isaac rubbed the back of his neck. "Sorry about Zane. He takes jokes too far." Zane? That was a familiar ring to Alice's ears. Where did she hear that name? Then it hit her. The boy Jake was talking to was named Zane. Shit.

"What time did he get home yesterday?" She demanded.

Puzzled, Isaac answered. "Well, as far as I know, past midnight. Why? Did he keep scaring you?" Worry was visible on the boy's face.

She shook her head. "No, he didn't come to me, but I think he went to my brother. I was talking to him about why he stayed up late and he said he was talking to a kid named Zane. And as far as I know, Zane's an uncommon name. So start talking or your ass is grass, and I'll be smoking it!" Okay, maybe that last part sounded funny, because a slight smile was on Isaac's face as he rubbed his temples.

"Okay, after school, the two of us go get your brother and we'll all head to my house. I can't explain anything without my older brother, Elias, being there."

Alice contemplated. She could go to his house, but she could also refuse. She had to admit- she was curious. Really curious. If anything happens, she could at least get Jake out of harm's way. Even if it was just for a minute, she knew how clever he can be at hiding and sneaking out. "On one condition- don't lay a finger on Jake. At all."

Isaac let out a breath. "You really are a guardian," he breathed to no one in particular. Alice ignored that comment. "Deal! But I can't guarantee that Zane won't." She gave him a glare and he shrugged. "Zane doesn't have any other friends besides Elias and I. And then to meet Jake. . . Well I think he's happy to have a friend in your brother. He's harmless, I promise."

She gave in and the bell rang, signaling for the end of lunch. Isaac and Alice walked in an awkward silence as they shuffled their way to their shared class- creative writing. Unfortunately for Alice, he sits next to her.

Alice mentally slapped herself. When will this day end?

Isaac opened the door of their creative writing class for Alice. In an attempt to make the situation less awkward than it already was, he said,"Here ya go young miss," with a goofy accent. She gave him a small smile as she passed through the open door.

His heart was pounding for the rest of the day, nervous for what would come. Alice also had sixth period with him, so they walked in a heavy silence out of the old building. "What the fu-" Alice started, as she marched ahead of a very confused Isaac. He looked on, trying to understand what happened. A boy with dirty blonde hair and bright hazel eyes was approaching Alice. He assumed it was her brother, Jake. Finally reaching the siblings, he quietly listened in. "Jake, is Zane a new friend you met?"

Innocently, the boy nodded, startled at the outburst. "Yeah, I met him yesterday." He stared at Isaac. "Who're you?"

Awkward. He forced a smile and tried to sound as polite and casual as can be. "I'm Zane's older brother. You and your sister are coming over today." Jake stared for another moment, and shrugged off.  He called home, letting their mother know that they'll be hanging out with some friends and hung up.

They walked their way to Isaac's house, with Alice in the middle, while Jake asked questions. Things like if Zane will be there as well. Isaac answered them with simple answers. He was too distracted by his hand being dangerously close to brushing against Alice's. As they turned into the street where Isaac's home was, her hand brushed against his. It was like being shocked, but with pleasure. She glanced at him and crossed her arms against her chest. She didn't look mad- in fact, she looked just as confushed as him. Elias' words echoed in Isaac's mind. Don't fall in love with her.

This will be harder than I thought. . .
