Isaac Gray peered out into the inky blackness of the night. He wasn't frightened, just unnerved. He felt uneasy at the stillness surrounding Springvale. It was like the calm before the storm. That storm was approaching- and fast. He didn't know what he was going to do when it hits, but he knew that he wouldn't be bracing it alone.
Alice Rider took a deep breath as she walked through the main hall of her new high school, Springvale High. Due to her father's change in job, she was forced to transition between her old life and old friends to a completely new setting. It wasn't a big change, really. She wasn't very close with her friends and never even bothered to get their numbers before leaving. Her home life was exactly the same as it was previously. A noisy, but at least protective, younger brother, Jake, her calm pianist mother, and her hard-working father. Even with the subtle change in her environment, she felt insecure. Right before leaving, she had cut off most of her platinum blond hair, making her look almost like an anime guy, with the long parts of her bangs forming a sort of triangle on the bridge of her nose, while her shorter part of her bangs rested voluminously on her forehead. She honestly thought she looked like a boy with a feminine body.
Few people glanced at her briefly, deciding that she wasn't anything different than one face in a school of two thousand, and moved on. Alice breathed a sigh of relief as she reached for the door handle of the office. She regretted letting go of that breath, as she took a sharp intake of breath when a hand brushed against hers lightly. She drew her hand away quickly and stared up curiously at the other person.
It was a guy. He wasn't completely skin and bones, but he was lanky for his height. He had soft-looking brown hair that lightly curled up at the ends in random strands of his mostly straight hair. His eyes were the same brown as his hair, contrasting to his pale skin.
"Oh, sorry," the boy apologized, flashing a slight, embarrassed smile.
Her heart raced as heat rose to her face. She glanced down, avoiding eye contact. "It's fine," she said softly, staring intently at the floor.
The boy opened the door and motioned her to go in first. "Ladies first," he said in a funny voice.
Alice stifled a giggle and mumbled her thanks and walked through the door. She walked up to front desk. After getting her schedule, she turned to walk out of the office when she saw the same boy she ran into leaning against the wall next to it. She was about to walk past him, but he called out to her.
"Hey, you're new here right?" He asked.
Duh, that's why I got a schedule. "Uh, yeah, I just got my schedule," she said awkwardly, not wanting to snap at the boy for his obliviousness.
She studied his face closely. He looked somehow familiar to her. She'd seen that face before somewhere, but she couldn't remember where. . . She snapped out of her thoughts as he asked her a question.
"Want me to show you around? By the way, I'm Isaac. What's your name?" He grinned like an idiot.
There's something. . . Sweet about this guy. I like that. "Sure. . . I'm Alice for the record."
He beamed even brighter. "Cool, let's go. And lemme see your schedule, I'll show you where each of your classes are. We've only got like what, twenty minutes or so, until school starts, and I think you shouldn't be late for your first day of class."
