"Wake up darling", James whispered softly as he knelt down beside you, gently kissing your forehead. You opened your eyes to see the morning sun shining on his beautiful face as he smiled at you, the faint smell of breakfast and straw in the air. "I didn't want to wake you dear, you looked beautiful", he confessed as he put the breakfast tray on your lap. "Not as beautiful as you darling", you smiled as he sat beside you as you ate breakfast in bed, listening to James talking about the horses, his hand playing with you as you wasted the day away, kissing and strolling through the fields around your country cottage. The post arrived not to long after, a letter from your sister for you, and a confidential one for James which he read in private. That evening, he never left your side, his arms always wrapped around your waist, his kissing on your cheek, even pulling you into his lap beside the fire as the dark night closed in. He held you tight all night, and it was only the next day when you asked him what was wrong which he told you. His orders to leave for war. The date drew closer and every second he wanted to spend in your arms. You stayed strong as he kissed your lips one final time before mounting his horse, riding off into the sunrise. His daily letters you recieved only made your heart ache more for his return home. Until one day, the letters stopped. The sun seemed to fade, the fire grew colder, the food more unpleasant until the box arrived. The small box, scratched and worn, tied closed with a black ribbon. The contents you already knew, despite being unable to see through your tears. His hat, which you'd mended yourself and stitched his name in, the coloured faded and slightly dirty, a red speck on the rim. You clutched it against your heart as you broke, the truth too much to accept ....
