I sat in the waiting room flipping through magazines, Monroe sat next to me playing some violent game on his phone.
I sat quietly drumming my fingers slowly on my newly protruding bump, I ran my hands over my belly, drifting off to sleep.
My body trembled in the cold room, the lights were so bright, they were almost blinding, I tried to move but I was strapped on to the hospital bed. But I wasn't in a hospital. Just a really big room. I struggled to turn my head to the side as a heard footsteps, the clicking of high heels. I strained against the straps that were holding me because I knew they were going to do it again...
"Whit! Whitaker! Wake up", Monore was shaking me awake.
"Ugh, what are you doing", I rubbed my eyes as I spoke to him.
"They've been calling your name for five minutes, let's go", Monroe's whisper yelled.
It was weird lately I had been having strange, scary dreams that never quite made sense. I slowly rose to my feet as my headache subsided, walking towards the doctors office, with Monroe's hand in mine. But I couldn't shake the thought; what was it?
As we sat down walked in the doctors office I couldn't help but feel a sense of déjà vu, as I looked around. I looked around the room as I entered, The nurse exited quickly shutting the door behind me. The walls were painted dusty light blue, various degrees and paintings hung on the walls, neatly matching the decor. There were medium-sized leafy plants bunched into one corner and a back wall made of glass over looking a perfect view of Seattle. The room was very spacious and if I hadn't seen his degrees myself I wouldn't believe this was a doctor's office, more like a Fortune 500 CEO. I cautiously walked towards the plush chairs that were the same color as the walls, as I sat down I felt instantly more relaxed, Monroe took a seat next to me but still looked tense. The doctor walked in and took a seat across from us in a big brown leather chair behind an even bigger mahogany desk, perfectly polished, so well in fact I could make out my reflection, and not a finger print in sight. I looked up at the doctor, he was a tall handsome man by any measure, his skin was a milky beige and he had cold piercing grey eyes, this contrasted with his light brown freckles spread across nose and under his eyes. His head was completely bald which was odd because he looked so young to me. I began to lean in as if it was instinct, I began to place my hands on the desk but thought better as the doctor cleared his throat and began speaking, "Hello, my name is Charles Carter, as you know I'll be your doctor throughout the rest of your pregnancy, and I look forward to having you as a patient. Usually I wouldn't call you in so hastily but there were some irregularities in your last ultrasound, and we just wanted to follow up with both of you."
The technician and the nurse practitioner wouldn't tell me what was happening when I had my first ultrasound, they just looked very shocked and told me they would schedule an appointment for me so I could speak to my doctor as soon as possible.
"It seems," he continued "we'll have to have another ultrasound today, this time in my facility to insure that you are getting the the most accurate information we can offer, please follow me." He stood up and gestured towards the door giving me a reassuring smile as I stood up. This entire ordeal was freaking me out I was terrified for my baby and myself, I prayed nothing was wrong.
I layed on the exam table as Dr. Carter moved the transducer around my poking abdomen the gel spread over my stomach dripping down my sides becoming cold in the cool room. The monitor displayed an image that I couldn't quite make out even as the doctor moved around I began gettk ng nervous all over again. I grabbed Monroe's hand looking up at him but his eyes were trained to the monitor inspecting every inch of the screen. I looked back at the monitor as Dr. Carter began to speak "Well I have news, Miss Evans, and Mr. Kingsmen," I felt Monroe begin to tense up again, bracing himself for horrible news. "This is not unusual at all, however it is news only I, as your primary physician, can talk to you about." I took a I'm a deep breath in, exhaling slowly to keep calm.
"Just tell us the damn results," Monroe snapped at the doctor. Dr. Carter's frowned at Monroe, then began to chuckle, "You're going to have a tough time dealing with twins with such a short temper."
