"Don't do that, love."
I pulled my head up from in my hands. Looking around me, there was no one there, I was still the only person in the prison. It must be my head, I haven't eaten for awhile. I tucked my knees into my ribcage and curled my head in again. The sobs came harder this time, but I was dehydrated, so there were no tears left.
"Please don't cry, it's hard to watch" the voice said again in a soft tone. My head whipped up once more. I'm not crazy, I'm not crazy, I'm just extremely hungry, and tired, and thirsty.
"Don't be scared, love. You're safe for now."
This time I saw him, he was watching me through the bars of a two foot by too foot square in the wall where there were bars instead of stone. The hole was at the bottom center, so we were eye level.
I starred at him for a long time before he spoke again, "Hello love" he said with a smile when my eyes found his. "My name is Demetrius," it was quite for a moment "I won't bite, love. I'm not the one you should be afraid of," he added.
"Evangeline" I whispered, my throat dry and raspy.
"Evangeline, that's very pretty- you are very pretty. I know you're scared and I don't blame you. This place is hell." He paused, maybe to see if he had upset me then continued when I was silent. "I've been here for a very long time, believe me when I say there is no escape."
