do you ever get the sudden feeling of pain and regret? or just utter sadness? why do we as humans feel such emotions?

aurora trudged through the school, passing the table where she could be sitting if she were to keep her mouth shut. melanie glanced at her, gesturing for her to sit, but she continued to walk at a slow pace. she made her way to the library, where hardly anyone was apart from students looking for textbooks. her phone buzzed in her back pocket, making her pull it out and scan through the messages.
melanie: aurora, ignore luke he's a super huge dick face. - seen 10:42am

melanie: sit with us at lunch, rory, please? - seen 10:42am

unknown number: hey aurora it's ashton. melanie gave me your number and you should really ignore luke and hang out with us later on today? if not it's okay. - seen 10:44am

melanie: i'm calling you rory for now on whether you like it or not now sit with us. - seen 10:44am

frowning at the texts, she slid her phone back into her pocket. teachers watched her carefully as she placed her things on a desk and began to write slowly in her notebook.

i feel an unknown emotion as i avoid them all on the third day. quite frankly, melanie is my only true friend at the table. i wouldn't recall her as a true friend honestly. just an acquaintance with a kind heart and a will for peace. although i wanted to sit with them, i didn't want to show luke that i was going to come running back. and i tell you again and again, i was going to stand for myself even if i find myself not wanting to stand for life.

"hey aurora." someone mumbled and sat beside her, making her quickly close her notebook, unable to finish. she faintly turned her head as calum gave her a soft smile. pushing the hair out of her face, she gave him a simple smile back, fumbling with her things. "what have you been writing?"

"homework." she muttered as he slowly picked up the notebook in front of her, taking the pen briskly from her hand and grinning at her. leaning over the book, he drew softly, not letting her eyes see what he was creating. she peeked her head over his shoulder, making sure he wasn't reading anything on the inside. he pulled away, sliding the book over to her. she quickly looked at the notebook, trying to notify it's sudden differences. nothing seemed different, but the small drawing of a bumblebee in the corner.

raising an eyebrow, aurora looked up at calum who sat with an eager grin. "just thought it needed a little something." he shrugged, making a small smile spread across her face. he felt the instant feeling of pure gold. finally seeing the warm smile which she held, after only a day or two of their greeting, made him smile wider. her warm presence radiated off of her tan skin, her brown eyes slightly sparkling as her smile grew. he felt as if he succeeded.

aurora, on the other hand, not knowing the feeling bubbling up inside of her, she glanced between the bumblebee and calum as her smile widened.

maybe. just maybe. she thought. pain is temporary.

she sat in english, spinning her pen along the desk. her palm held her face up as the teacher bragged on and on about the importance of fine writing.

a tap on her shoulder made her body shift, pretending she didn't notice. another tap was notified slightly on her back, making her turn around.

"hey." melanie said softly, giving her a soft smile. "i'm sorry about luke today really he didn't mean it at -"

"it's okay." aurora nodded, cutting her off and slowly turning to face the front of class again.

after a long, consecutive hour, the class was dismissed and aurora found herself walking with melanie towards the table again. much to her dismay, she sat across from luke. she glanced up at him, already to see his eyes shooting daggers at her. he let out a long sigh, lightly pressing his hands on the table.
