Chapter 17

"What's going on?" I ask my Aunt Lauren.

"There's been an accident." She answers vaguely.

"Are you guys okay?" I question with worry.

"Yes, we're fine. Your parents and Ian were in a car wreck after dropping off his friends. We're headed to the hospital right now." She tells me.

My heart stops. "Okay, I'm coming."

"Be safe."

I hang up and grab Lily's hand then quickly walk to my car. I load them and make sure they're okay. I get in and start my car then head for the hospital.

"Em, is everything okay?" Lily asks.

I'm on the verge of breaking but I can't do that right now. "Something happened." I answer.

Lily must sense something not right because she doesn't say anything more.

I drive as fast as the speed limit will allow, even though I just want to race like Lightning McQueen right now.

It takes about ten agonizing minutes until I get to the hospital parking lot. I hop out and pack up Lily and Jackson's things. Lily helps me grab the candy bags while I unbuckle Jackson, who is drifting off to sleep. I carefully pick him up, shut the door and lock my car. Then take Lily's hand again as we make our way to the emergency room doors.

When I walk in, there's a couple of people that give me strange looks. Right, I'm a butterfly with a wolf and a little red riding hood. I ignore the looks and continue my trek to the room where poeple wait for others.

My aunt and Uncle Dan are waiting there. Lauren catches me right away and gives me a hug with Dan following. She pulls back and I notice tear stains on her cheeks as she takes Jackson from my arms. Uncle Dan takes Lily and their things.

"I'm sorry, Emerson. Everything will be okay." Lauren tries to assure me. I nod but my vision blurs as the tears threaten to spill over over. "Dan, take the kids home. I'll stay here." Lauren says to him.

"No, you guys should go home. I'll be fine." I say, my voice thick. Lauren shakes her head.

"I called Jake and he's coming with Cleo." Dan says, "So we can stay with you."

Then Jake comes in the room and takes a glance at me and immediately pulls me in a huge hug. Cleo takes Jackson and gives me a side hug and says it'll be okay before taking Lily's hand and walking back out. Jake talks to his parents a little bit before taking the kid's stuff and leaving after they promised to call him in a little bit.

A doctor comes out and says my last name. I go to him with my aunt and uncle following. "You're family?" We nod.

He tells us they all lost quite a bit of blood in the wreck. They're either sleeping or unconscious. Mom has a broken arm, dad has a broken leg, and Ian has a broken arm and he had surgery on his leg and something happened to his neck from the impact.

Aunt Lauren and Dan go talk about something and I find myself leaning on the wall. Then I slide down, pull my legs up, and let my head hang and let the tears fall. All the emotion builds up and sobs wrack my body.

I feel a presence next to me and look at Lauren crouching next to me. "We can go see them now. Wanna come?" She asks me.

I shake my head and try to wipe some of the tears away. "I can stay." She says.

"No, go see them. I'm not ready yet." I tell her.

She nods and walks away. I begin crying again. I sit there on the floor, a terrible sobbing mess.
