Mason nods his head encouragingly again. "It'll be fine. I took care of most of it."
I offer a small smile in return. We head down to the living room, talking about a random subject on the way.
Sadie and Matthew are just starting to wake up.
"Good morning." I chirp as I plop down next to Sadie, who is stirring back and forth between sleep.
She rubs her eyes and looks at me. "Morning."
Matthew is still asleep on the floor. Sadie chucks a pillow at him and he wakes up.
"Do you guys want to go out for lunch?" I question.
Sadie perks up at the mention of food. "Sure. Give us at least fifteen minutes."
I nod and they go get ready. I fold up their blankets and toss the rest of the pillows on the couch.
"Are you going to the hospital today?" Mason questions as he sits on the couch.
I sit down and curl my legs to the side. "I plan on it." I answer. He nods.
The other two come back, we go to my car, then to a restaurant to eat. The four of us sit at a table and talk, enjoying each other's company. We finish, pay, then decide to go to the hospital.
I end up getting my mom, dad, and Ian little teddy bears. The four of us walk in and go to my family's room. Dad and Ian are eating their lunch and mom is the same as always. I hand Ian and dad their bears and set mom's in her bed next to her arm.
"I thought you guys might want a little friend." I say.
"Thanks, Em." Ian responds.
We sit around and talk. My phone vibrates in my pocket and shows that aunt Lauren is calling me. I go the hallway and answer. She just wanted to know how Ian and dad are doing. And how I'm holding up. I end the call after she says a few more things.
Just about the time I walk back in the room, someone calls out my name. I look down the hall and see Doctor Jenson coming up to me.
"Hello Doctor Jenson." I greet with a small smile.
"Hello." He replies.
"What's up?"
"I just came to say that our speculations about the, uh, attempt of your brother were wrong." He says slowly. "It was just a deep cut from when he was pulled out of the car. A big shard of glass got him. I'm very sorry for this misunderstanding." He explains.
I nod once but stay silent for a bit. "Excuse me." I finally say and walk straight out of the hospital. I don't even wait for his response.
The chilly wind bites at my cheeks as I walk to no place in particular. I find myself walking on a trail at a small park. I always end up at parks.
I feel relieved that the attempt wasn't true. Then angry because the hospital had a job and didn't really prove the information they got before telling me. It's a hospital. Finally, I feel relieved again that my family is okay for the most part.
My phone rings out a couple of times but I ignore it. I sit down on a bench that's by a tree. I take out my phone and set it next to me. I have calls from Mason and Sadie. I breathe in deeply and let it back out.
Mason's name, number, and picture pop up on my screen when it vibrates once again. I decide to answer it because they probably thought I got kidnapped or something.
"Emerson! Are you okay?" Mason asks as soon as I tap the answer button.
I focus on the colored leaves being blown by the wind on the trees. "Yeah, I'm fine." I answer.
