I was walking along a river it was the same river, I suddenly realized, that Derek used to show me a meadow; our meadow. It was just like I remembered, the wind was slightly blowing, wild flowers and ankle deep grass swaying; and lush green leaves fluttering. Suddenly I saw a figure come out of the shadows, I squinted trying to make it out; I gasped when I finally did, it was Derek.

He looked exactly the same when I saw him, long brown wavy hair, freckles sprinkled across his nose; and he had those cute little dimples when he smiled. He gave me that lopsided smile he knew I melted for, he kept walking until he was in front of me.

“Derek?” I gasped, I fell to my knees; thankfully Derek caught me. I was sobbing against his chest.

“Shh, baby, shh. It’s alright, I’m here now, it’s alright.” He soothed, I grabbed a fistful of his shirt.

“No! De-Derek no! It’s never… going to be… alright again! Th-this isn’t real… this is just a dream!” I sobbed, he smoothed my hair and put me in his lap; he rocked me like he used to when I had a nightmare about Jaden. I suddenly heard Derek mutter a curse word. I looked up at him the same time he jerked me to my feet; I gasped and blinked while he quickly but gently wiped away my tears.

“Bella, sweetheart, I came here to warn you.” He said, he wore a worried expression.

“About what? What’s wrong?” I asked, he shook his head and took my hands.

“I thought they would give me more time, Dammit! I need more time.” He growled, he was scaring me now; I’ve never seen him angry, at least not at me.

“What are you talking about? Who’s ‘they’?” I asked, he turned me around and put his hands on my back.

“I can’t explain, you have to go; you have to run. Run Bella, run as fast as you can; don’t look back. Go, now!” He said, he pushed me and I ran like I saw Alexis in track. I wasn’t watching my feet and I ran off a cliff. I gasped and shot up in bed sweating, I looked around the hotel room.

“Just a dream.” I murmured, I took a deep breath and exhaled. I looked over at the alarm clock 11:27; I sighed and decided to get dressed. I pulled on a pair of black skinnies, a clingy black top and a small navy jacket. I stuffed my shoes on and headed to the elevators. When the elevator opened its doors downstairs Justin rushed in and rapidly pushed the button for its doors to close. Finally the button obeyed and closed but not before I heard young teenage girls screaming his name.

“Justin! Justin, I love you!” A redhead girl yelled.

“No, I love him. He’s going to be my husband!” A blonde haired girl argued then they all gasped when they saw me.

“Hey, it’s his new sister Ashley!” Squealed redhead, I grimaced and looked at Justin, annoyed, as the doors closed.

“You like the attention? We’re going to be buried in it when we get to North Dakota.” He said, I wrinkled my brow and looked at him horrified with my mouth gaping open like a fish.

“NO! I don’t like attention at all and I never will!” I yelled, his eyes bugged out and he lightly touched my shoulder.

“Hey calm down Ash, bad night or something?” He asked, I was instantly reminded of the nightmare; I swallowed and looked down.

“Sorry, I just didn’t get much sleep last night.” I admitted, I looked back up at him after a few moments of silence.

“Nightmare?” He asked, I furrowed my brows and tilted my head.

“Yeah, how’d you know?” I asked, he shrugged.

“Brother Intuition, want to talk about it?” He asked, I answered his question by walking out the elevator doors and to my room. I looked over my shoulder and saw Justin had followed, I opened the door and walked to the bedroom where Charlie was standing pretending to be sizing up my red lace nightgown.

“Charlie, what are you doing here? Get out.” I said, he turned around with a cocky grin.

“Hey now baby, don’t talk to your boyfriend like that.” He said I was up against the wall just like last night only this time it wasn’t lust that had put me there; it was fear. I saw Charlie in boxing practice, it’s where I learned some of my badass skills from, he had taught me most of my boxing techniques; which is why I now feared him. Charlie put both of his arms on either side of my head and brought his lips down on mine hungrily.

“No Charlie, stop.” I said, only my words were muffled by his lips. I broke away long enough to tell him again, he smiled and shook his head.

“No.” He said he brought his lips back to mine; once again I pulled back and told him to stop. He repeated the same answer.

“She said ‘stop’.” I heard Justin say, I looked over and saw him with clenched fists at his sides and he was shaking with anger. Charlie jumped away from me instantly but not because of Justin, it was because we heard the door open and Coach Kwan came in.

“What’s going on in here?” He asked, Justin came to my side and Charlie was edging toward the door. Coach looked at Charlie then Justin then his gaze landed on me, his eyebrows rose in questioning. “Well?” He asked, I cleared my throat and looked at Justin then back at him.

“Nothing, we were just rough housing Coach.” I said, he seemed satisfied with that answered because he was backing toward the door nodding his head.

“Okay, just don’t let anyone get hurt Valdez. The tournament is tomorrow.” He reminded me, I nodded and hugged my torso.

“Okay, Coach.” I said, he and Charlie left the room; and I turned to Justin. I gasped when I saw his left fist bleeding “Justin, your hand.” I exclaimed, he looked down opening his hand only to have blood dribble onto the floor. “Come on.” I said, I grabbed his good wrist and pulled him to the bathroom. He hopped onto the counter without me asking him to. I wet a washcloth and, as lightly as I could, I dabbed away the blood; Justin winced as I did. I looked up at his face and grimaced.

“Sorry.” I apologized, he shook his head.

“’S okay, are you taking doctor classes or something?” He asked, I smiled and looked back down at his hand.

“Yes, but I’ve known how to do this since before I was in high school.” I said, a few minutes of silence passed.

“He could’ve raped you, you know.” He said, I looked up from wrapping a bandage around his hand.

“I know, but he didn’t.”

“If I wasn’t there…” He trailed off, I didn’t want to think about it; so I just smiled.

“But you were, you did everything a big brother is suppose to do for his little sister. You probably would’ve done more if Coach Kwan hadn’t come in, but I know Justin.” I said, I felt tears threatened to fall over.

“You know what?” He asked, he jumped off the counter and stood tall; I felt small even though he wasn’t that much taller than me.

“That you’ll protect me, you’ll protect me when I need you most. Just like big brothers are suppose to do.” I said, the tears fell now; Justin wiped them away and squeezed my shoulder.

“He didn’t protect you, did he?” He asked, I shook my head; my lip trembled as I let a snippet of a story spill out.

“I told him I was scared, I told him that Joey had hurt me and he’ll hurt me again. I guess he didn’t believe me, he didn’t believe his little sister was scared of a pedophile. How could he not believe me, Justin…” I trailed off as Justin pulled me to his chest and let me cry. He rubbed my back and shushed me, said everything would be alright. If only he knew, if only he knew how close we were to my father; Anthony Valdez. Or how close he was to us, to me.
