Chapter 34
"Grayson, can you stop that humming?" I asked, glancing up from my homework.
Grayson gave me a smile. "I'm sorry, Flower. Does it bother you that much?"
I nodded. "Yes. Yes it does."
"And would it bother you if I sing?" Grayson asked.
I sighed. "Can you ever just be quiet while we do our homework?"
"Nope," Grayson said.
I rolled my eyes, turning back to my homework as Grayson continued humming Christmas songs. It was the first of December and he kept telling me it was never too early to listen to Christmas music. He was even listening to it the day after Thanksgiving.
Dad walked into my bedroom. "I just got some good news," he said.
I looked at him, noticing the smile on his face. "What?"
"That was the hospital," Dad said. "You're going in for surgery on the 23rd."
"Seriously?" I asked. I was happy to get into the surgery, but I was a bit worried. I knew the doctors knew what they were going to do, but I was afraid the surgery wouldn't work. That I would never be able to walk again.
Dad nodded. "After the surgery, you will no longer use the wheelchair, but you'll have to use a walker."
"If the surgery is successful," I muttered.
"Flower, think positive," Grayson said. "Remember all those permanent injuries. You're lucky to get surgery for it."
"Listen to Grayson," Dad said. "You are lucky to have this opportunity."
"I know," I said. "I'm just worried."
"There's no need to be worried," Dad said. "The doctors know what we're doing. And if it will make you feel better, I'll see if I can be part of the surgery."
I smiled faintly and nodded. Having my dad work in the hospital had its benefits. Him being part of the surgery would make it easier for me. "Thanks, Dad," I said.
"Of course," he said before leaving my room.
"You see?" Grayson said, moving over so he was sitting beside me on the bed. "You're lucky."
"I know," I said. "Promise you'll be at the hospital while I'm getting surgery."
"Yeah, of course," Grayson said. "And I'll be one of the first people you see after you wake up."
"That's all I want," I said, leaning my head on his shoulder. Homework could wait. Right now, I just wanted to be with Grayson. I needed the comfort because I was still worried. I shouldn't be, but I couldn't help it. It was part of my nature to worry.
Grayson wrapped his arm around me and kissed my forehead before resting his head on mine. "I love you, Flower," he said.
"I love you, too," I said. "Now, can we focus on our homework without you humming Christmas songs?"
"Not possible," he said. "There's one that's stuck in my head and it won't go away. Can I sing it for you?"
"No."
Grayson cleared his throat, causing me to sigh. He was going to start singing anyway. "On the first day of Christmas my girlfriend gave to me, a homework free make-out session."
