Chapter 17
All that filled my ears was beeping. Constant, steady beeping that was honestly getting on my nerves. I slowly opened my eyes, my vision blurry at first. All I saw was three figures.
"Poppy?" someone said hopefully. "Can you hear me?"
"Yeah," I said, blinking a few times to clear my vision. The three figures belonged to my parents and Tony. I looked around, noticing I was in the hospital. "What....What happened?"
My parents looked at each other, seeming like they didn't want to tell me. They had a reluctant look on their face.
"What?" I asked. "Mom? Dad? What happened?"
"Well, what do you remember?" Mom asked.
I closed my eyes, trying to remember something, anything from what might have happened. However, my mind was drawing a blank. I didn't remember what happened. The last thing I remember was waking up in the morning. That was it.
"Nothing," I replied, opening my eyes again. "Can someone please tell me what happened?"
"There was a crash," Mom said. "We don't know what caused it except that it only involved one car and a tree. You went with Grayson to the doctor's and on your way somewhere, the car crashed. Grayson....He's not doing well, sweetie."
"What do you mean he's not doing well?" I asked, my lips trembling a bit.
Mom sighed. "The impact was more on the driver's side. He....He's....I don't know how to tell you."
"Poppy," Tony said, kneeling down beside the hospital bed. "Grayson's in a coma."
As soon as I heard those words, my heart dropped. "What? For how long?"
"That's the things about comas," Tony said with a sigh. "They don't know how long he'll be in one for. It can be a few days, weeks....months."
I felt my eyes burn with tears, so I closed my eyes and rested my head on the back of the bed. Grayson....He was in a coma and they didn't even know how long. What if he never woke up? What if he....What if he died from it? I might never be able to talk with him again.
"Poppy," Tony said softly. "They're doing everything they can. You just have to hope."
I wiped the tears of way, keeping my eyes closed. I just wanted to wake up in my bed, hoping it was all a dream. Hoping Grayson was actually okay.
"I'm going to head down to the cafeteria," Dad said.
"Me too," Mom said.
"I'll stay with Poppy," Tony said. Once Mom and Dad were gone, Tony said, "Poppy, you have to try your best to remember what happened. If another driver caused it, you can sue them."
I sighed, opening my eyes and looking at my brother. "I told you, I don't remember anything. I don't even remember the doctor's...."
Doctor's appointment. Antidepressants.
Suddenly, words became flashing in my mind.
"Would you stop being so stubborn?!"
"I can take care of myself! I don't need you babying me!"
"I'm not babying you! I care about you and I don't want to see you get hurt!"
"I won't get hurt!"
Our argument. We got in an argument, the worst one we had ever had. Our argument caused the accident because he wasn't paying attention to his driving.
"What's wrong?" Tony asked.
"It's all my fault...."
"How was it your fault?" Tony asked.
"We....we got into an argument," I said. "He wasn't paying attention and...."
"Poppy," Tony said. "Just because you got in an argument, it doesn't mean it was your fault. It's normal for couples to argue."
"It was my fault," I objected. "I was the one who started it. I shouldn't have gotten mad because he doesn't take his antidepressants. I should have left it alone."
Tony sighed. "Poppy, it wasn't your fault. You're looking out for him, that's all. You got into an argument, so what? It doesn't mean it's your fault?"
"Can I....Can I see Grayson?" I asked.
"You have to wait for the nurse," Tony said. "She has to make sure you're okay to get up."
"Why wouldn't it be okay?" I asked. "I'm awake, aren't I?"
"You were in an accident," Tony said. "You got injured too, you know. Concussion and back injury, more specifically. It's best if you stay rested."
"Tony, I need to see him," I said. "I don't care if I have a freaking injury. My boyfriend is in a coma and...."
"Poppy, calm down," Tony said. "Please. You'll be able to see him, okay? Just wait until the nurse comes to check up on you."
I frowned, closing my eyes, trying to wake up from the horrible nightmare. However, the pain in my lower back still told me that it wasn't a nightmare. It just felt like one.
The nurse came back to check on me, telling me a bunch of stuff I honestly wasn't thoroughly listening to. I picked up a few stuff; not to stand for too long and not to do too much physical activity. She finally gave me the all clear to go wherever I wanted in the hospital as long as my brother stayed with me.
After finding out where Grayson's room was, Tony helped me stand up, which sent a sharp pain in my lower back. The nurse wasn't kidding when she said not to do too much physical activity, even though standing up was nothing.
I pushed through the pain as Tony led me to Grayson's room. I was a bit reluctant to go in because seeing him would force me to accept that Grayson was in a coma.
I walked in his room and stood by the door, really taking it in. All kinds of machines were hooked up to him. Even though they were helping him, they terrified me.
"Tony," I said. "What if....What if he doesn't make it?"
"We will," Tony assured. "He's strong. He'll make it through." I still heard the doubt in his voice, which made me doubt it even more. But I had to believe Grayson would make it through this.
I couldn't lose him.
______________
So much drama....Poor Grayson, in a coma. ): Let's hope he makes it through.
