Chapter 9

[Shinyfall's POV]

I stayed in the apprentice den with Featherfall and all the kits. We were the last two defenses if the fox got past Flamefur, Bluesnow, and Cheetahpelt. We had to wait till Spokenstar and Nightmoon got back with the two apprentices. We would need more warriors if we were going to kill the fox. I stayed by the front of the den so I could see if it was coming or not. I couldn't see anything yet but I could scent the fox now.

"I can scent it! Be careful!" I told them staying just under the roof of the den. Flamefur could be able to fight very well but she was still weak. Bluesnow would be okay to fight but I knew she couldn't fight as well. The only reason Cheetahpelt was here was because he couldn't fight against the other foxes. I hoped that he could at least fight one fox. Featherfall and I couldn't help as much if we had to protect the kits.

Soon I saw the red fur of the fox pad unsurely into the camp. It didn't look like he wanted to hurt us. Once he saw Flamefur running toward him, he backed up. Cheetahpelt looked at the fox carefully not sure what to make of him.

"Wait! Don't attack him!" Bluesnow yowled at her siblings. She ran to Flamefur and knocked her away so that she couldn't hurt him. "He doesn't want to attack." She said softly looking to them.

"That right." The fox said roughly. Since when could foxes talk cat? I was extremely confused but kept listening. I wanted to figure out what was even happening and why this fox wasn't attacking. I also wanted to figure out why I could understand this fox.

"Wait, why can we understand you?" Flamefur asked a little confused. She still looked like she was ready to attack but she was farther back so she couldn't attack as easily.

"Others teach me language since me understand." He replied. All I wanted to know after that was if all foxes could I stand us and why we couldn't understand them. Yea, sure they were part cat. Could that be the reason they understand us? But since they are also part dog or something like that is that why we couldn't understand them?

"What is your name?" Flamefur asked cautiously getting in front of her brother and sister so she could protect them. I kept my eyes on the fox wanting to know all about it. This was strange but there was to be a good reason for all of this, right?

"Nug-get," he said with a huge smile on his face for saying it. So his name was Nugget. Even if he did know a little bit of cat he still couldn't really say his name that well. I kinda felt bad for him in that way. We had always learned our name as soon as we are born.

"Alright, you stay away from the apprentice den. Cheetahpelt, you need to get Spokenstar and Nightmoon." Flamefur said looking back slightly to him. Nugget nodded and kept away from the den I was in. Cheetahpelt started to protest but then broke off into a run out of the camp. It was kinda bad to see him go but I knew he would be back really soon with how fast he was.

Alright, new chapter. I'm working right hard but I also have basketball and writing two other books. Really three if you count a fanfic I'm doing. Well I hope you liked this. Yes I finally got nugget in. I completely forgot about him in the first book. Actually I wasn't sure if he was in the clan when Flamefur, Tigerstripe, Cheetahpelt, and Bluesnow where kits.
