Stevie shook with all of the rage that she could muster in her small body. Her eyes seemed to glow.
"Stevie?" Carol asked. "And I see you're still with him."
"Carol... I w-"
"Yes. Yes. We're still together." Lindsey stated.
"Well good. You're each other's destiny." Carol sarcastically added.
Stevie was in a stunned silence. Her heart jumped a little as she felt a familiar hand touch her shoulder. She turned her head and expected Lindsey.
Instead, there was a woman. A blonde woman. "Carol. Hi it's Chris, I can't help but notice that you said that they're destined."
"That I did." She smirked. Lindsey looked at Stevie, obviously concerned.
"Listen up, bitch. They are destined to be together. They are destined to have a family together. They WERE destined to have their daughter."
"Look Chrissy, I-"
"It's not Chrissy. It's not Christy. It's mother fucking Christine Anne McVie!"
Carter instantly muted the microphone, just to turn it back on and whisper "Bye. Love you mom."
The words broke their hearts. Carter flipped her hair.
"So coffee, anyone?" All three of them nodded.
"On me?" Christine offered.
----------
Carter sipped her coffee in silence.
"So...", Christine started, "You really look like your parents."
Stevie and Lindsey eyed each other.
Stevie trembled a little. Lindsey placed his hand on her back, calming her.
"Not quite." Carter said, "Frankly, I look more like Lindsey."
Once again, they sipped in silence.
"That's what I've been meaning to tell you," Lindsey started. "We're re-"
Something seemed to enrage Stevie as he spoke. "Lindsey, shut up. I will handle this." He gave her a confused look. "I am tired of getting to know my daughter through sideways glances in your directions. I am tried of comparing her face to her father's. I am tired of looking at her Facebook page and adding her under a fake name so I can see her life. I am tired of learning about her through private investigators. Carter-" she said, "you're not Carter. You are Bianca Nicole Nicks Buckingham! You're our child!" The whole restaurant turned to look at the screaming rockstar.
"Bianca?" Carter asked.
"Rewind a second," Lindsey said, "you've known?"
"I sent her the tickets." Stevie said blankly.
-----
They couldn't take another night of talking.
That's what they considered to be another strain on their relationship.
They needed passion, not love.
They needed to feel, not to understand.
They need to feel connection, not feel connected.
They needed to use each other, not each other.
