CHAPTER 2: THE FIANCE'S FRIEND

The first day is always that time of the semester when students rush to school, eager to impart stories to friends and classmates they had not seen in a while. But the college of nursing begged to differ as its students sported just half of the others’ enthusiasm. Who earns a truck-load of excitement after a two-week summer vacation? Incoming sophomores and juniors carried the curse of a mandated summer term. Sunscreens and swimwear slid back to storage as books and group works monopolized summer days, almost hiking up the torture of the heat to an unbearable level.

At the same time, the first day of the first semester could be a short road of laxness most of the time, much to everyone’s delight. There were professors and instructors who took the time building rapport with the class, getting all friendly in the most therapeutic ways they can, easing up with just the course orientation and dismissing early. And then, there was Professor McFadden.

The wall clock ticked in its rhythm, each snap unplugging a needle from Alex’s chest. She had been enduring the unannounced lecture for hours. The others as well, got their spirits cropped out as they forcibly adapted from vacation to school toxicity. Professor McFadden tirelessly rubbed how time was made of gold and should not be squandered to any extent.

“Fifteen… more… minutes…” Alex motivated herself. Just as she thought that the skies couldn’t get any greyer, here she sat, getting her brain overwhelmed by large chunks of data. Like getting oneself tied hard to a tree while a time bomb beeped relentlessly nearby, Alex surrendered on keeping up her focus, ending up with no choice but to wait on her brain to finally explode due to information overload.

As nonpareil as McFadden is, he had maximized the four-hour allotted time to its last drop. The clocks striking 12nn was a celebratory moment for the tensed atmosphere in the classroom. Alex grabbed her backpack and made her way out of the room swiftly, only to realize that Tracie must have gone with other chicks for lunch. Heaving an exasperated sigh, she despised how spending lunch alone was cherry on top of her crappy cake.

“Cheers to eating lunch with no one, yes?” Alex mocked out loud as she traded books with her locker at the second floor.

In a blink, she found her mood smoothly anew when a voice so familiar to her playfully answered to her rhetorical remark. “No! That’d be too lonely, don’t you think?”

Alex’s widened eyes immediately turned the sight around to confirm the very origin of the voice. Behind her was her college best friend Fatima Rind grinning at her. They ran into a tight hug in desperation of amending for the two months of best friend bonding hiatus.
