I was brushing my teeth, getting ready for school as usual. I rinsed the foam out of my mouth. I tapped my tongue on my canines, flashing a smile, then walked out the bathroom. As I opened the door my brother, Nathaniel, was leaning against the wall outside. "Jesus Christ, get caught up brushing your tail?" He hits me with his shoulder on his way into the bathroom. I brought my fingers to my mouth and started biting my nails, trying to relieve my anxiety.
I was starting a new school today. A human school. I begged and begged my father to let me continue to go to a hybrid school, but they just didn't have the money. So to public school I would go. I went up to my room to grab my bag. I looked in the mirror one last time before heading downstairs. I pulled my beanie down and my collar up. The autumn winds were already cool.
"Nate! Abby! Time for school, let's go!" Derrick, my dad yelled from the living room.
I stood at the door with my father, waiting for Nathaniel. He came out the bathroom about five minutes later.
"Do you plan on being late?" Dad asked Nathaniel.
"I would have been done quicker if the mutt wouldn't have taken ages in there."
"Nathaniel Alexander!"
Oh, middle name, that's serious.
"Apologize to your sister right now!" Dad shouted at him.
"Why should I?! She should apologize! She's the freak!"
"Nathaniel! Stop it! Another word and you can walk yourself to school!"
"Hmph." He crossed his arms.
"Finished?" Dad asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Yes." Nathan rolled his eyes and walked out the door. I heard the car door slam shut.
Me and dad looked at each other, he signed and I held my tail tight while I finger combed threw it.
"Let's go Abbes."
He put his hand on my back and guided me to the jeep. It was an aqua blue with huge tires. I don't know much about cars but this thing can take a beating. It's all terrain and we take it everywhere.
I hoped in the passenger side and dad got in the driver's seat. Nathan was staring out the window with his beats headphones on Mom got him for his birthday. Dad sighed again and started up the jeep.
The drive to school was terribly fast. When we pulled up Nathan got out the car without a goodbye as fast as possible. I turned to dad and tried to smile.
"Do I really have to go?" I asked for about the thirtieth time.
"Yes, dear, you have to go. I'm sorry. Try and have a good day, alright? I'll see you at 3." He leaned over and kissed my forehead.
"Love you dad."
"I love you too honey."
I got out the jeep and clenched my bag. I looked at the big school. I put my ears flat against my head so they wouldn't stick up under my beanie. I let my tail drop and sway behind me.
I started walking towards the school, trying to control my breathing.
I can do this. I'm normal.
"Look, another mutt."
There's more hybrids here?
"What's that make? Five now?"
There's four more?!
"We're gonna get fleas."
I chuckled, hybrids don't get fleas, only wears do.
I opened the door and went into the school. I looked for the main office to get my schedule. An older lady was stapling papers together.
"Uh, I'm new, could you please give me my schedule?"
"Name?"
"Abigail Michaels."
"Michaels... Michaels... Ah! Found it. Here ya go dear." She hands me my schedule and smiles.
"Thank you, very much!"
I leave the office and start down the halls. I look over my schedule and see I have Science first period out of my seven classes.
I have to go up to the third floor. After I finally get to the top I stop outside the door and take a couple deep breathes. I open the door and walk through. All of the class turned to look at me.
Shit.
"May I help you?" The teacher asks.
"I'm Abigail, your new student?"
"Ah, I was waiting on you. Take a seat." He points to a seat behind a blonde boy. He's very muscular, broad shoulders.
I walk through the desks, listening to the other students muttering comments.
Look at her tail!
Not another one.
Shut up, she's pretty!
You shut up! What? You into hybrids now? Why don't you go mate why it!
"Class, class. That's quite enough. Well Abigail-"
"Please, call me Abby."
"Okay, Abby, I'm Mr. Merrick."
I smirk and nod. I get a notebook out of my bag and take notes like everyone else.
The boy in front of me turns in his seat and faces me.
"Ignore them, you're gorgeous. Hey, I'm Wayde."
"Abby." I smile.
