The bell rings, and everyone hurries out of the class. Casting glares my way. I put my notebook in my bag and start to head out of the room.
"Hey! Abby!"
I turn to Wayde hurrying to catch up with me.
"Hey, Wayde. What's up?"
Come on Abby, he's going to class like you idiot.
"Uh, just going to my locker. Here, add me on snap." He hands me his phone. "My name is the same on every social media so you can just add me." He scratches the back of his neck.
I smirk and add him on snapchat before the bell rang.
"Crap, well, uh I'll see you later okay Abbs?"
"Uh, yea, sure." I chuckle.
He runs down the hall to his class that I made him late for. I had to get to my next class, which is orchestra. I play cello, I've played since 5th grade. It's my favorite, most beautiful instrument I've ever encountered. When I walk in the teacher shouts my name.
"Hey! What are you doin in my room?!"
"I, uh, thought this was orchestra?"
"Are you Abigail?" He asks.
"Abby, but yes."
"Great! Grab a chair and a stand." He points to the chair and stand racks. He points to the spot he wants me to sit. There's eight other kids here, we're sitting in a U shape with the teacher at the opening.
"Well Abby, I'm Mr. Thompson, the music teacher."
"Hi."
"What do you play?'
"Cello."
"Awesome! There's two cellos over there, a good one and a crappy one. Make a good decision."
He motions for me to go pick one. I go to the cello rack and look at the two cellos. He wasn't lying by saying a good one and a crappy one. The good one was a golden brown color with a shiny glaze. While the bad one was dirt brown with scratches and dents all over it. I picked up the gold one and headed back to my seat.
"Do you know how to tune?" Mr. Thompson asked.
I nodded.
"Great! You do that and I'll be back in a sec. Everyone else, you know what to do."
As he turned I noticed something amazing. Something that made me shriek with joy. Something that could possibly make this school enjoyable.
He had a tail.
But where were his ears? His claws? Sharp canines? I didn't notice any of them. He came back out of his office with papers, sheet music. I realized that I haven't even tuned the cello yet. To my luck it was close to perfect. He placed the music on my stand then stood in front of all of us. He counted us off and we played through ask the music.
When we finished we had about 10 minutes of class left. Everyone started putting things away so I followed suit. Mr. Thompson called me into his office.
"How long have you been playing?" He asked.
"Since 5th grade."
"You're very good."
"Thank you very much, it's my favorite thing to do."
He smiled and a silence fell between us.
"So um, when you got my music. I noticed you have a tail. Are you, are you a hybrid? Please don't take offense in me asking. I'm just very excited to see another hybrid here."
"Oh it's non taken, and yes, I am I hybrid."
"But, your teeth, ears, claws? They're just, not there...?"
"It's complicated, one of my parents is a hybrid and the other is a human. So I'm only half hybrid." He smiled when he finished.
"Oh wow. That's really reassuring. Thank you."
"It's no problem."
He motioned that I could leave. I got my books off the shelf I left them on. The kids were watching me with wide eyes. I turned to lean against the wall and caught one of the girls reaching for my tail.
"Wow! What the heck do you think you're doing??!"
"I-im sorry! But you're fur just looks so soft. It's so pretty."
I was beyond confused. "Thanks?"
She kept staring at my tail, I wrapped it around my leg. She had crimson red hair, it was obviously dyed that color.
"Can I, um, can I touch it?" She asked quietly.
"You're not scared of me?"
"What? No. You're really pretty."
I pointed my tail at her and her face lit up. She reached for my tail and began stroking it.
"Oh my god it's so soft!"
I ran my fingers through my hair and laughed a little. The bell rang and they all began to move for the door. She let go of me and grabbed her books.
"My names Marisol, by the way."
She walked out of the room and I chuckled to myself.
First day, and a girl with red hair plays with my tail.
