I stepped up to the door, knocking twice nervous as ever. Claire hadn't answered my letters or texts for three months now, and I was worried. I wanted to know she was okay. I heard shuffling inside and the door swung open.
"Claire, liste-" I began to say, but stopped short realizing that it wasn't Claire, but Anika.
"What're you doing here?" She asked.
"I'm looking for Claire. Is she here?" I asked, pushing my way in, just incase she was trying to hide from me.
"No, no... oh God. I knew..." She stopped, hands covering her face.
"Knew what, what happened?" I asked, trying to pull her hands from her face.
"She's.. oh God, no." She let out a sob and I feared the worst. "Th-the night you left, or morning what-whatever time i-it was," She stammered, pausing to take a deep breath.
"The last night you were together, the night she left and came home, two guys-two guys had broke into the flat. And when she got here, her mum was dead. But she didn't know that." Anika covered her face again, I could tell she was crying.
"Sh-she was shot too, immediately rushed to the hospital, the neighbour heard." Another sob, she leaned into my chest, but I was stone.
"She was awake for a while though, she told me everything about you two. Even the letter." She pulled back, I wasn't looking at her swollen eyes anymore, just out the window at the gloomy looking city.
"Cl-Claire wanted me to tell you something, but she never got the chance to tell me what it was. I was rushed out by doctors. They wouldn't let me in anymore."
"Th-they told me.. they said that she hoarded all of her pain meds, after she found out she was paralyzed." More sobbing. I thought I was about to start too.
"And the-then she..." Anika couldn't finish the sentence. She didn't need to.
"I-I have to go. Thank you." I turned, quickly going down the stairs. I didn't make it out in time. Tears were beginning to streak my face as I got down to the lobby.
"God, if only I'd been there! Why couldn't you have stayed with me longer? Why'd they have to go to your apartment? " I pulled at my hair, my face hot with tears. She should still be here. It's not fair. I loved her.
But I swore, no matter what happened, I would never forget about the girl with the silver hair.
