The Heart of a Mate: Chapter 13: A Matter of Trust

Lauren's POV

I watched as Langley pulled a small package out of his leather bag, dread and fear completely swallowing my whole being. The second I made the choice to go through with the medication, Langley had sent for it. It's taken two days to get here and during that time, I was allowed to let Pyro feed off me. Without my Shifter blood to alleviate the pain, he was a whimpering mess. His whole body spasmed as he floated in and out of consciousness.

"Please hurry." I begged, Pyro's hapless form just a few feet away. He was alive with fever and night terrors.

"I'm going as fast as I can." He ripped the brown paper that covered an opaque box, inside it, a precious vial that determined Pyro's outcome. He walked over, hypothermic needle in hand. "Take off your shirt." I did as instructed without hesitation, wanting to rid the Halfling of his torment. I gritted my teeth as he plunged the needle into my arm and injected the serum. I became a bit light headed but other than that, I was fine.

"How long do I have to wait?"

He shook his head as he disposed of the packaging and it's contents. "You don't."

I jumped from my seat and took my spot next to Pyro's side. I wrapped an arm around his shoulders and pulled him into a sitting position, his body flinching away as if my touch physically pained him. I placed my wrist at his mouth and coaxed him to drink. He instantly plunged his fangs in and swallowed deeply. "How long will it take the Vampire Ashe to work out of his system?" Before Langley could answer, a mangled scream escaped Pyro's lips and I was violently shoved. The blood that cascaded out of his mouth seemed to burn as if acid. He withered and cried out, Langley looking on with a sinister smile painted on his face. "What the hell did you do?!" I exploded, Pyro's cries filling the room.

Langley bowed his head, his pointed chin almost laying against his chest. "I beg of your mercy, I am a faithful follower of the Sayrin - but not of the leech he hides."

I knelt next to Pyro, his chest convulsing violently as he vomited blood and a thick black substance. "He's your brother!" I objected, I couldn't understand why no one heard anything and come to my aid.

Normally I couldn't shake the small crowd following me, but the moment I need them - they're gone. "I order you to help him - now."

He simply laughed and without a second thought I attacked him. His head slammed against the wall and the air was knocked out of his lungs. Items crashed down around us, having been knocked off the nail upon impact. He grabbed my shoulders and we rolled across the floor, running right into the bed. The leg bit into my side, Langley not fighting back but rather just keeping me at bay. "Please Sayrin, I am not the traitor here!" He leaded but I refused to listen to him.

"He did nothing upon his own free will." I reminded, enraged that Langley had taken it upon himself to end his own brother's life over something he had no control of.

Suddenly, everything was quiet. There was no screaming, whimpering or even thrashing. My eyes widened at the thought of Pyro's lifeless body on the bed above my head. While I was terrified, Langley smiled. I kicked him off me and scrambled to see over the cover sheet. My heart beat wildly in my chest, confusion striking my very being. Pyro wasn't dead; he was very much alive and in Jay's arms, my mate's wrist enveloped between Pyro's lips. His eyes were shut but his shallow breathing proved his vivacity. "Jay?"

"I want the full story and I want to know why everyone I employed is knocked out like some kind of fucken orgie." My mouth gaped at his words, my real shock forming from the fact that Jay was willingly allowing Pyro to drink his blood. Jay released Pyro before grabbing Langley by his shirt collar. I could hear him pleading and Jay's grip tightened and for a brief moment, he was the young kid I had first met: innocence beaming off him like rays from the sun and eyes only made to idolize his older brother. It hurt to see him now in such a pathetic state. He went quiet as his now lifeless body slumped to the floor and Jay joined me on the bed with Pyro.

Jay glared at me, his eyes like daggers. I had just finished updating and needless to say, he wasn't very pleased with the fact that I was willing to risk my life to save Pyro's. It had been liquefied Vampire Ashe Langley injected me with and while it had absolutely no catastrophic effects on me, it almost killed my first mate. "Are you really that dense Lauren?"

"I made a mistake Jay - I trusted him." I crossed my arms and sunk deeper into my chair, most likely making me look like a pouting child.

"...and what if I hadn't come when I had? He would be dead and you'd probably be a bloody mess."

I quickly stood. "Stop lecturing me Jay! You might do that in the Shifter District but I won't allow you to do it here." I walked up to him, my eyes piercing straight into his. "I'm the Sayrin here - my word has more power than yours!" The more acidic my words became, the hotter the pendant around my neck burned.

"Lauren, calm down -" Jay took a step back, his face now reflecting off the unearthly glow. I tried to calm down but the newfound power that flowed through my veins was intoxicating. I ripped the pendant from its place and dropped it next to me. My body seemed to weigh a hundred pounds heavier, causing my knees to buckle and give way. I crumpled to the ground, my head spinning viciously. "Baby, are you okay?"

I slowly shook my head, "What the hell was that?" I picked the pendant up from where it laid, careful to only touch the chain. It was once again its normal color of wrought iron and cool to the touch. "I'm sorry Jay, I didn't mean it-"

"No." He stopped me, '...you was right to correct me. This, after all is not my district to command." He took my hand and used it to pull me closer to him, his hot breath cascading over my skin. My hands slid down his muscular torso and rested on his pelvic bone. "I think I just might like this Lauren." He admitted with a lusty smile.
