When writing, it is also important to have paragraphs and chapters. Bringing paragraphs into the story helps readers, well, read easier. This way, they won't lose track of where they were and make it less confusing.
There are different reasons why you should change and switch to a new paragraph:
Switch of topic, switch of date/time, flashbacks, switch of which character is talking, and - why I use paragraphs - to add suspense/drama. Like so:
"Dipper raised his mind eraser at another object, almost losing his balance when he realized who he was about to hit.
Gideon." -- (excerpt from my fan fiction, Gravity Falls VS The Forces of Evil).
Just like paragraphs, chapters can add suspence and change of time/date, as well. In order to successfully grab the reader's attention, use a great introduction into the chapter to hook them in.
