Everything I explain in this book will be my attempt on stretching your knowledge on all, if not, most of the varying aspects of writing as a whole. I will reteach you all of the things your English teacher has probably told you once when you were gnawing on your Ticonderoga while daydreaming about that cute boy, Jake in the next seat over. (Not really, but y'know. Really specific.)
In this chapter, I will inform you on the importance of... drum roll, please...
No? Okay, I'll just tell you.
Dialogue!
Dialogue is the complete chitter-chatter of your characters and conversations that unfold in your stories. What your characters say, they say for a reason. Do not add boooring dialogue between two characters just to have them talk. Exclude the repetition of real life talk in everyday reality. Let what your character says be unique and mean something to the plot, whether it may be adding to the tension in your story, the adding of knowledge to your reader, and the overall climax and buildup of your story.
You can move plot along through dialogue just as much as you can with actions and events that take place in the plot.
Do not have your character say something completely random if it does not move your story along!
Random, tiresome dialogue with no parallel to the actual plot or storyline can make your readers feel like the story has stalled. (It's like the equivalent to the feeling like when my Playstation 1 would always crash when all I wanted to do was play Rayman but it still stalled because it dated pretty much back to cavemen times.)
(Yes, that was a run-on sentence. Don't test me, me.)
All joking aside, without dialogue, where would the story be, really? If people don't converse like actual people, then how can a storyline move further ahead in a story sequence? People cannot interact with the world around them without having a story.
If all the characters do is sit around and seem lost, wandering around the empty abyss, then there would be no story. Just a blank canvas.
No productive dialogue = No story
See what I mean?
