Itachi was confused and somewhat concerned for his friend.
It was rather odd (actually humorous) to watch Shisui slam his forehead against the table's surface the moment Shisui sat down in the booth. But after much staring, Itachi cleared his throat and leaned in closer to his buddy.
"Shisui?" Itachi hesitated on patting his head. "Are...you okay?"
Shisui grumbled on the table, but because Itachi did not respond to what sounded like grunting, Shisui suddenly sat up straight in time to give Itachi a jumpscare. "When I said I had to talk to you about something embarrassing, I really meant it."
"Who do you think I am?" Itachi demanded with a cross of his arms. "I've been your friend - family, by force - for too long to be affected by your so called embarrassment."
Shisui sighed, running a hand through his hair and kept it there. "You're right. In that case, I'll be blunt: I will be abusing your Best Man title."
Itachi snorted. He wanted to answer back with something witty but instead allowed Shisui to explain himself.
"That means that, sometimes, I will need you to be in my place whenever I can't."
Actually, that confused Itachi. "How is that going to work exactly?"
"Maybe I started at the wrong place," Shisui mumbled to himself and pinched the bridge of his nose. "Basically, my work has been busting my ass, demanding more of me ever since the wedding plans started. There are going to be moments that [Name] will need me in order to make decisions for the wedding, but my schedule has been hectic-"
"Wait, wait-hold on." Itachi raised his palm to stop him and then lowered it to declare his turn to speak. "First of all, why has your work demanded more from you?"
Shisui bit the edge of his lower lip, which indicated hesitation to answer at first. "Okay, fine. I have thrown myself to work more, honestly. I know a wedding will be a high cost and [Name] will... She will want her day to be special. And special will cost many shiny pennies, so I want to be able to afford it all."
"Shisui, it's your wedding day too," Itachi said earnestly, but Shisui only laughed at that.
"I know! But I just...want to be able to say yes to everything she asks me to give her."
Itachi smiled, watching Shisui sip awkwardly from his straw as he gazed out the window. It was a rare moment to see someone like him so dedicated, considering his poor romance history. His attitude actually made Itachi curious as to how much she's changed enough to hook onto Shisui, and him seemingly not letting go either.
"I'm sure [Name] is a reasonable girl," Itachi comforted and sat back on the booth. "She doesn't look like the type to leave all the weight on you, so why should you worry so much? She said yes to marry you after all, right?"
Shisui paused his sipping and briefly stared at Itachi, placing the glass down on the table. "Actually, you have it backwards. Sure, [Name] isn't the type to sit back and demand luxuries, but she does like to push time..."
That was something new, which caused Itachi to lean forward again in interest.
"I wasn't even thinking of marriage, even when we reached two years of dating," Shisui explained. "She always brought up the marriage subject, and I'd maneuver around it. But she... I guess [Name] expected more of me." Shisui chuckled, lowering his head to stare at the clinking ice in his glass while Itachi tried to piece everything in his head.
Something was off; her personality was not the one he's been describing. Even after being gone for so long, Itachi didn't find anything different with her the first time they met again. So, if marriage wasn't Shisui's wish then why would she push him to it?
