Shisui eventually noticed.
As much as he wanted to doubt, he eventually suspected. Maybe he wanted to deny, better yet, but even he caught up eventually on some hints. It may have hurt him at first but, eventually, it started making sense. Eventually— that's the key word in his observations. Yeah...
Shisui was currently on break, and instead of spending it talking wedding arrangements on the phone with [Name], he was simply being a couch potato in his office. Sometimes it was nice listening to the murmurs of the air conditioner for a change. Even looking up at the ceiling became interesting, staring at that awful water stain that was oddly shaped of a giraffe. But doing this also helped him smooth over his stress levels— except now he was thinking back in time.
He was remembering that night he walked alongside [Name] after their usual date. They walked in silence; she was a few steps ahead of him with only a cell phone and wallet in her hands, while Shisui mentally fought with himself. He couldn't choose between allowing the silence to guide them home or to break it. Then again, he couldn't tell if it could be the little alcohol she consumed that may have taken effect on her communication skills. Whatever it was, it was out of character for [Name].
In the end of his mental battle, Shisui decided to yield and stuffed his hands into his pockets, when suddenly she stopped. [Name] sighed and turned to him, frowning at first, but once she looked him in the eyes, her lips spread lovingly.
"Hey, let's get married."
He remembered wincing from surprise at first, then chuckling to mask it. They'd known each other for five years before finally dating, and not once did she ever mention the word engagement or show interest in living together in their early years of dating, therefore he's avoided the marriage topic.
At first it was basically 'screw morals and let's live our life' for [Name], whereas Shisui did secretly like the idea of marriage and tradition. But after this much time hanging around with this human, he just allowed all the cards fall where they may. And the last card apparently dropped out of nowhere around their second year of being in a relationship.
After eating out at their usual place for umpteenth time, having the usual conversations, having the usual and occasional touching of their hands at the corner of the table, this woman turns to Shisui, possibly slightly drunk, and simply proposes so casually? No passion? No pretty please?
But her voice didn't slur, nor did she sway in her heels. Her dress had no food stains either, which was a habit of hers to eat quickly when she was exhausted so the night would be over and could go to bed sooner... No. She just stared at him with that lingering smile, waiting for an answer.
"Okay."
Shisui remembered flushing after sounding out that simple word, yet he could scratch the back of his head. Luckily, [Name] turned her back to him in time for him to frown at what just happened. He allowed her to lead the way before he followed. More silent walking...
And now that they are this far with their random wedding plans, he has concluded: [Name] wasn't too hard to read. Because, coincidentally, about two months before she dropped the engagement bomb, Shisui mentioned her about his dearest friend finally coming home from the military, and he didn't want to start wedding plans until his arrival.
Her answer shocked him at the time. She didn't argue back, she wasn't reluctant. She just nodded quietly. But easy term agreements weren't too shocking. It was her triggered nervous reaction to the simple news of an unnamed friend coming home. [Name] encountered much worse news in her profession, which is why avoiding eye contact, leaning back on her chair as she chugged a cup of water a little too quickly before picking nothing at her nails— all signs he's picked up over the years knowing her— didn't make sense at the time.
