"Carmen, please!" I beg, in a whisper so that no one else hears.
My sister shakes her head.
"No. I can't."
"You can! You have to!" I plead, but she's defiant.
"I have to what? Put on more and more weight just so they've got another excuse to ridicule me? I can't take it anymore, Avery! You don't understand just how hard it is to have to go through that every day!"
I can see she's close to tears now, so I give in, even though I know it's the wrong thing to do. I quickly transfer some of her food to my plate, then watch as she hides more of it in a tissue. The rest she leaves, but it now looks like she's eaten more than half of her dinner. In reality, though, she's not eaten anything.
She didn't eat breakfast either, and at lunchtime I watched her put her sandwiches in the bin, along with everything else our mum spent time putting together for her.
"Thanks." She says, smiling slightly.
I don't smile back. I want her to know that I don't agree with what she's doing.
Even though I understand why she's doing it.
