Brian was friends with Abigail for a week or two now. At least every two days, they sat together to share their daily shenanigans, or -as you'd suspect from two stereoscopy nerds- their collection and knowledge of stereoscopic cards. Like you could've known from the previous chapters, Abigail had more butterflies in her stomach than there would be in a meadow in the early summer when she was with Brian. But Brian didn't felt that way about her.
Ofcourse, she was nice and all, but there was one thing Brian wanted - and that wasn't the urge to experience the bodily love with a female. Instead, he would love to do something in that part of the love spectrum with a feminine looking drummer - something which the loyal readers of this story already would know (Chapter 1 - just in case!). Brian decided that today would be the day he would tell this to Roger.
That day was a day in the middle of February. There were still bits of snow lying on the grey pavements of the city, and fog lifted up from the muddy water of the river Thames. Roger sat on a bench on the riverbank, looking at the rippling water. The sun was already setting, since, you know, days in February are usually short. Brian walked up on him, and found a place on the bench, next where Roger sat.
"Rog?" Brian said.
"Yeah?" Roger answered, while lighting a cigarette. "You want a ciggie too?"
"No, thanks. I don't smoke," Brian said. "I-I just want to ask you something..." Brian was a little bit nervous, which you could hear in the stutter of his voice.
"Righty-o," Roger said. "Just... Ask ahead, Bri."
Brian decided to approach Roger with a simple question, in which all references to bodily friction would remain covered. "Rog... are you, or have you ever been in love?"
"Course I am! I mean, back in infant school, I've had, like, six girlfriends! Wait, I've had seven, after all Mrs. Mills, my teacher, was also my girlfr-"
"No, Roger, I am talking about your love life in the present day," Brian cut off Roger in his sentence.
"Oh yes, I'm single at the moment but I'm seeing anyone." Brian's heart filled up with hope. "Who? You got to have to tell me, I'm your best friend after all!" he said, excitedly.
"You really want to know?"
"Ehrm... yes?!" Brian said.
"Right. Well, it's this person who really loves stereoscopic cards..." Brian couldn't believe it. There weren't that many stereoscopy fans Roger would know, so there was no doubt that he was in love with Brian! "You know, that girl..." Wait. Girl?
"That girl you've been spending your breaks with for the last few weeks. I don't know her name yet, but duuuuuude, she's friggin' HOT!"
Brian felt his dreams shattering like the interior of a porcelain store being visited by an elephant. "Oh... Okay... Nice to know..." he said, fighting back the tears. "I've gotta go. Mum has probably made dinner already. See ya tomorrow, Rog."
Brian couldn't hold back his tears on the way home, while the sky was slowly turning black again. Normally, he'd stood there, looking at the stars, but this day he could only think about Roger and Abigail. Abigail was such a nice girl with such a nice personality, but he wasn't keen on seeing her with Roger. Roger, the man of Brian's wildest dreams, together with Abigail?
No. That could not happen.
