How to save a life

Chapter 5

Days past and Kate sat straight in her bed. She had gained a lot of strenght. She had her hair in a messy bun, and she magaged to smile sometimes. Her boyfriend was sitting next to her. Josh and Kate were laughing at some jokes. Rick had been in the hospital all day, but he didn't want to be in the same room as Josh, knowing that he might sleep with another nurse after his visit. Rick had been waiting in the waiting room, playing with his phone.

Josh left the room and walked away. He looked angry. Rick stood up from the waiting room to Kate's room. Before he walked in, he took a deep breath amd knocked. When he entered he saw that Kate had been crying.
"Kate?"
"Castle you don't have to stay. You can go home." Kate said drying her tears.
"What's wrong?" Rick said. He wasn't planning in leaving her, not like this.
"Nothing. Don't worry."
"This isn't nothing." Kate gave up. She knew that if Rick wanted to know something, he was going to ask until he knew.
"I broke up with Josh." Kate said. Rick said on the edge of her bed and laid his hand on her legs.
"You okay?" He asked.
"Yeah. I found out that he slept with nurses when I was gone, so yeah I'm fine."
"You sure?"
"No." Kate said but she kept her tears inside. Rick saw that she was trying and he sat closer. He hugged her and didn't realize he was doing it until he felt her head under his chin. "Also, I didn't love him that much. I really liked him, but that wasn't enough." Still sobbing in Rick's chest made her feel better. Just him being there for her was for Kate great.

Kate felt tired and fell asleep in Rick's arms. After a couple of minutes he let her go and got out of bed and sat on the chair. Rick was watching her sleep. He was so happy that Kate was alive. God knows what would happen if she died. What if she died? What would Rick do? What would his life be like? Rick didn't want to think about it. Kate was there now and he wasn't going to lose her again.

While Kate was asleep Rick had left. He had to, he had been there all day and he wanted to go to the precinct to check up on the case. When he arrived he walked straight to Esposito.
"Got anything?"
"The gun. Wiped clean. It was registered to a dead man, millitary force. That's all. We got nothing of the witnesses. How's she doing?"
"She fine. But she and Josh broke up so she's a bit upset about that part. She's sleeping now."
"Oh. If you visit her again today tell her I'll drop by soon."
"I'm going tomorrow. I need to go to Alexis." Rick said and he watched his watch.
"Ke. Bye."
"Bye." Rick said and left the precinct. He got in his car and drove home.

Rick opened the door and walked inside. He hung his jacket on the hanger and kicked off his shoes.
"Alexis?" Rick yelled.
"Yeah?" He heard from upstairds. A door closed and he heard footsteps. Alexis walked down the stairs and hugged her dad. "Hey dad."
"Hey baby." Rick said and kissed Alexis's head.
"How's Beckett?"
"She's okay."
"Good." Alexis said and left her dad's embrace. "When are you planning on telling her?"
"Tell her what?" Rick asked like he didn't know. He walked to the couch and sat down.
"You know what." Alexis said and followed him.
"No, I haven't. And I am planning on keeping it that way."
"Dad, just tell her. You love her more than anything. You have to tell her."
"Actually I have." Rick smiled.
"When?" Alexis asked surprised and sat straight.
"When she was dying in my arms." Rick said, less smiling. That wad a sentence he thought he'd say. He actually never wanted to say that, only if it was for his books. But this wasn't one if his books, he couldn't rewrite the ending. He couldn't delete the part where Kate was shot and he couldn't rewrite the part where Johanna never would've been killed.
"And she heard you?"
"I don't think so. She isn't saying anything about it."
"How's she behaving?"
"Like any other person that had been shot. Broken."
"No I mean, towards you."
"She, uhm. She held my hand when she was crying. And she asked me to lay with her, twice. Well the second time she didn't ask but she didn't push me away so that's good I guess." Rick said and it got him thinking. Kate did change after she wss shot.

When Kate woke up the first thing she did was look at the chair. It was empty. He wasn't there. She sat straight and took the book from the night stand. When she did, she saw the photo that was on there. It was her mom. Kate took the photo and stared at it for a while. Tears started to build up in her eyes. Thinking about what she had been through because if her death was hurting Kate. She got a flashback from the night when Detective Raglan came by. "Why isn't she here yet?" Kate asked her dad. They were in the restaurant waiting for Johanna.
"She'll be here soon." Jim said and took Kate's hand.
An hour later they decided to go home. Maybe Johanna was stuck at work or she just forgot. Father and daughter were walking home, hand in hand.
When they arrived a detective was waiting at their door.
"Good evening, are you the Beckett family?" The detectives asked.
"Yes we are. Who are you?" Kate asked cheerfully.
"Katie, manners."
"Sorry." She got that blush.
"I am detective Raglan. Can we take this interview inside please?"
"Yes, of course." And Jim opened the door.
Once inside they sat in the couch. Raglan told everything and Kate was crying. She threw her glass against the wall and didn't want to sit down. She looked at her dad, and saw that he was crying.

This memory did hurt her, a lot. The day she lost her mother was they day she lost herself. The day she lost who she was. The day she wanted to be a cop. But little did little Kate know that because of that day she had met the one guy she loved. And it wasn't Sorenson, it wasn't Josh. It was Rick. It's always been him. And she knew he loved her back, it just was the fear of losing one another.
