<Luna's POV>

I can feel the world coming back.

The bright moonlight, the smell of the forest, the sounds of the night.

Then the feeling of sadness and betrayal sinks under my skin, making me shiver. Shane, the kiss, his finger pressed hard against my neck, making me paralyzed.

I want to yell, scream. Find him and confront him. I don't know what else to do. In fact, I have no knowledge of the time or how long I was passed out. It feels like I've been out here for hours, but the position of the moon says otherwise. It's barely moved since the last time I saw it, indicating maybe an hour at the most. A quick glance at my phone confirms this.

How could Shane do this? Why would he kiss my then just up and disappear. I thought he liked me, loved me even. Why did he leave and why did he do it like he did?

My thoughts are interrupted by a rustle behind me. It was subtle, but caused by something big.

"Shane?" I say, my voice high pitched with hope.

Unfortunately, I'm not answered. But out of the corner of my eye, I see a quick flash of something. I thought I could vaguely see what looked like fire. I turned to where I saw it, ready to face what stepped out.

"Okay Shane! Very funny!" I throw my arms up and look around.

"Not quite." I hear behind me. I whirl around just in time to see a scarlet wolf walk out of the brush.

My heart flutters. The wolf standing before me just spoke. Before I know what's happening, I sink to the ground, still staring at the beautiful wolf. Her yellow eyes sparkle in the moonlight and her fur resembles fire.

She steps toward me, her features becoming clearer. I'm mesmerized. I can't move. I'm feeling a combination of fear and happiness. Her menacing figure over mine, causing me to shake.

The last thing I see before the Void takes me into darkness is the flash of her teeth in the moonlight.

<Shane's POV>

I sigh. I glance around The Clear again. Still nothing.

I honestly don't know why Alpha insists on guarding this place. We supposedly wiped out the last rival pack, leaving only one ally. Alpha says it's "rogue lone wolves," but I know there's something he's not telling us.

I relax and sink to my rump on the cool ground. This is such a boring night. Not even any movements from small animals or deer. Just as the thought crosses my mind, I see a bright flash of red like fire. I stand up alert before a thought comes to me.

I sigh again. "Ruby, I saw you." I say to the seemingly empty night.

She pokes her head out of the bushes, a smirk on her face. She steps all the way out, walking towards me.

I scoff and sink back down. As she's walking to me, I notice the drops of blood on her scruff, which means she found a Recruit.

The thing about werewolves, it's hard to find someone who can handle the Change. Most new Recruits go mad or they die, because their soul can't handle the new power and their sudden knowledge of their surroundings. Before Ruby, I was the last Recruit. It was hard at first, but I made it out. The reason I was chosen was because Alpha saw my soul could be strong enough to handle it. The Pack doesn't just choose someone random to take on the Change. The wolf appointed to find a good host of the infection must study them, usually not for long. A few minutes just watching them, especially in sleep, can determine if the person could be a werewolf.

"You found someone?" I ask, not really much concern under my question. She stops, just looking at me. There has always been bad blood between the two of us, since I was the one who turned her. It's supposed to be the other way around. The infecter and the infected are supposed to be close. That's not the case with Ruby. She hates me.

But I'm not sure why she's just looking at me. In a sudden burst of speed, she is right next to me, her breath that smells of blood running down my neck. I take in the smell more.

And my jaws almost snap at Ruby. I could smell it, the slight bit of Luna's perfume embedded into the red liquid. My heart races, my vision starts to get blurry. I shake my head and a growl escapes my throat. I turn to face Ruby completely, but she's not there. Right now I don't even care. The only word running through my head, no. I can feel tears gather on my eyes. Luna was supposed to be mine, and now she's probably going to die.

I can't see anything. I can't hear anything. The only thoughts clouding my mind is Ruby sinking her teeth into Luna.

I run towards Luna's beautiful smell. When I finally break the treeline, I can see her there, laying on the blanket we were sitting near before. The bite on her arm is clean and small.

I sit down next to her on my rump, but slowly shift as I lean forward and press my lips to her very feverish forehead.

I fight the urge to bandage the bite, because I know from experience that I could decrease her chances of waking up alive.

The thing about the infection, is its similar to like what pop culture says that a vampire bite is. The Hunter bites the Victim, and the Victim instantly put it a comatose state. If they wake up calmly, it means that the Change was successful. If they die or wake up frantic, it failed.

I close my eyes and sigh. Lydia is probably wondering where Luna is right now, since the party seems to have died. Although most likely she's up in one of the bedrooms having a one night stand.

Just as I'm lying back against the blanket to relax, a sharp and shrill shriek pierces the night like a dagger. It makes my hair stand on end and my throat open as a growl tries to escape.

I'm standing and running toward the sound and shift within a heartbeat.

I run towards where I think the scream came from. Out of the corner of my eye, I see a glint of silver and stop in my tracks. As turn toward the sound was, a yelp and jump backward. Looking back at me is a huge jet black wolf with silver eyes. I feel paralyzed. I see blood trickling from the wolf's mouth. I close my eyes and squeeze them, opening them to see that the menacing figure is gone. I sigh with relief until I hear the sobbing.

I rush towards a freshly beaten down path. I walk through the thick foliage until I get to a small clearing and my heart drops.

It's a girl sobbing. Next to her is a mangled body. She's surrounded by a pool of blood. Blood also is still running down a fresh bite mark in her arm. Then I hear myself yelp as the girl looks up at me.

It's Lydia.
