Skye's P.O.V.I sit next to Jamie on the edge of the old pier, letting my bare feet dangle in the water. The small waves slapping against the wood splash on my ankles and I draw them up out of the water, shivering.
"Are you cold?" Jamie murmurs, and I nod slightly. He takes off his black jacket and drapes it over my shoulders, leaving his arm around me. I wrinkle my nose at the scent of the jacket; it smells like weird air freshener, or something. I pull my black ankle socks and black converse on, not caring about the water that soaks into the socks. Sighing, I make to stand up and Jamie glances up at me, frowning.
"Skye? Is something wrong?" he asks, pulling me back down beside him and wrapping his arm more tightly around my waist.
"No, I just... I'm hungry," I say weakly, and he laughs.
"Girls never say that around me! They think it's impressive if they don't eat or something," Jamie chuckles, and pulls me to my feet. As soon as we're standing I step away from him, but he pulls me back to his side immediately, placing a kiss on my forehead.
"Come on, we can get something from Crystal Gateway," he suggested, leading me down the pier back to the town lights.
"Sure," I sigh, trying not to feel nauseous. I hate the food from our local Crystal Gateway. Everything is either super spicy, or full of meat. It's not that I'm vegetarian or anything, but I still don't like eating meat too much, for the sake of the animals.
Jamie pulls me onto the back of his bike and I wrap my arms around his waist, nervous. Earlier tonight was the first time I've ever ridden on a motorcycle, and it was awful. I felt at every corner like I was going to fly off, and the only thing I had been wearing was a black spaghetti strap singlet top and cargo shorts that reached less than halfway down my thighs. Jamie hadn't even given me a helmet, although I noticed he was wearing one himself.
I pull Jamie's jacket tighter around myself and zip it all the way up, glad for it's protection. He glances over his shoulder at me and laughs.
"What?" I mutter self consciously, ducking my head so that I can't see his face. I peer back up, seeing his smirk.
"Nothing. You just look so sexy in my jacket, babe," he murmurs, leaning back so that I am forced to press my body against his to stay on the bike.
"Jamie. Stop calling me that, okay? Please," I beg, trying to push him away from me.
"Ah, of course. You really don't like that name, do you?" he muses, sliding forward slightly and giving me a fraction more room. I sigh in relief and rest my head against his back, trying not to look at him.
"Is there a story behind it?" he asks curiously, starting the bike up with a growl.
"No," I snap, tightening my arms around him as the motorcycle pulls out into the middle of the road and down the street. The noise of the bike is so loud that I think he might not have heard what I said, and by the time we reach the restaurant Jamie seems to have forgotten what we were talking about.
I'm kind of grateful that he doesn't pay too much attention to what I have to say; I don't like talking about my past relationships, especially the most recent one. It brings back too many bad memories that I really don't need to be thinking about.
Jamie pulls to a stop outside Crystal Gateway, hanging his helmet on the handlebars putting up the bike stand. His arm slithers around my waist and he grabs my ass, holding it.
"Jamie!" I squeak, darting away from him. He shakes his head, smirking.
"Girlfriend, remember Skye?" he murmurs, his eyes filled with lust, "you have to do whatever I tell you to."
"That is not how relationships work, Jamie," I snap, crossing my arms over my chest. He draws me closer with one arm, pulling on my plait lightly.
"You should leave your hair out, ba - Skye," he purrs, smiling down at me with dark eyes.
"No," I say defiantly, tossing my plait, "don't tell me how to wear my hair, Jamie."
"Next time I see you, it won't be tucked away in that ugly plait, will it?" he growls, his grip tightening on my arm.
"Whatever," I mutter, defeated. Jamie smiles down at me, suddenly happy.
"Good," he says simply, pushing me towards the restaurant doors.
We are about to enter the restaurant when a car enters the parking lot with a squeal and the smell of burning rubber fills the air. The car screeches to a stop over two parking spaces and I groan as I recognise the car; it's Leo's dark silver Volvo C70. The door swings open and Leo steps out of the car, a ferocious scowl on his face. Behind me I hear Jamie swear softly as he slides his arm around my waist, resting his hand on my hip. This angers Leo even more and he storms up to Jamie, clenching his fists.
"Get your hands off my sister, you bastard," he growls, grabbing a fistful of Jamie's shirt. Leo is strong, but he's not particularly tall, and Jamie towers over him. He grabs Leo wrist and throws it off him, scowling.
"She's my girlfriend, remember? And I don't have to do whatever you tell me to, idiot," he snarls, pushing me roughly behind him.
"Hey!" I protest, my back slamming into the brick wall of the restaurant. I push past Jamie and leap in front of him just as Leo throws a punch; it hits me full on the jaw and I bite down hard on my tongue, warm blood flowing into my mouth and down my chin.
"Skye!" Leo chokes, reaching out for me. Jamie steps back and glances around us, a strange expression on his face. Is he... scared? Leo grabs my shoulders gently and stares at my face, the blood flowing over my lips. Tears slide down my face and mix with the blood, and Leo's face crumples with despair.
"Skye, Skye, I'm so sorry!" he cries, wrapping his arms carefully around me and holding me close. I whimper with pain as my tongue presses against the roof of my mouth and Leo springs away, a look of horror on his face.
"I'm sorry, sorry, did I hurt you?" he says desperately, backing away from me. I roll my eyes at him, trying to keep from sobbing at the same time. I know that if I open my mouth, it will be even more painful, and as it is I can hardly bear the agony. It feels as though I've bitten all the way through my tongue and it's come off in my mouth, just floating in the blood. The thought brings a wave of nausea and I lean over and retch into the gutter beside the restaurant, vomiting blood and water.
"Skye..." Jamie trails off, and I can hear him shuffling uneasily behind my back. I know he doesn't want to be here. He doesn't really care about me, I knew that all along. The minute trouble arrives, he doesn't want anything to do with me. Leo moves closer to me, trying to hold my braid out of my face.
"That's it." I mutter.
I shove him out of the way, whirl around and hit Jamie in the gut with as much force as I can muster. He staggers backwards and falls onto his ass in the flower bushes beside the road."What..." he wheezes, clutching his stomach, "you... bitch!"
Leo laughs hysterically behind me, then trails off quickly.
"Skye," he calls from across the car park, his voice nervous, "come on, get in the car."
"Wait," I say quietly, spitting blood onto the ground in front of Jamie and dragging my hand across my mouth. The back of my fist comes away streaked with dark, wet blood.
"I'm not done yet," I say, kicking out at Jamie. His hand darts out and catches hold of my ankle, throwing me off balance. I scream as I fall to the gravel next to him and he heaves himself out of the flower bed, backhanding my face with all his body weight behind the one hit. My head snaps back and cracks on the bitumen, sending flashes of white light into my field of vision. Jamie raises his hand again, clenching his fingers into a fist, and then everything goes dark.
