The Maze Rider

Chapter 2

Rose and Rachel sat shivering on the opposite wall to the savage as the box slowly but steadily made its advance upwards, Rose was starting to feel sick the swaying and darkness of the box was terrifying and the suspense, every time the savage stirred Rose gave a small jolt that thing scared her so much and she had a wound to prove why.
Suddenly the box gave a huge launch upwards and it increased speed, and in the corner of the dark damp box huddled was Rachel and Rose.
Suddenly it stopped and for the first time in what seemed like hours they got their first glimpse of light.
Then faces of people through a wired roof,
"Rachel..." Said rose in a wimped.
"Yeah"
"When we get out can we leg it?, cause i don't want that thing to attack me", rose gestured to the savage.
"Yeah, thats a good idea"
They looked back up and the voices started to become more clear, Rachel heared a few things.
"Girls they cant be girls"
"We have never got girls"
"Always boys"
"Lets hope their good looking"
Rachel turned to Rose, "I think were the first girls, to arrive?"
"To arrive where?" Rose looked confused
"I don't know but just run when you hit ground", Rachel gave Rose a long stare.

"Do you want some help?" A young good looking blonde boy, gestured down to Rachel and Rose as he opened the lid.
"Yeah", Rachel replied as Rose looked to scared to reply.
Rachel and Rose gathered there strength and walked to the edge of the box and avoided the savage, the boy threw a rope down Rachel grapped it and quickly turned to Rose, "remember run" she started to climb and stood up on solid ground she started to look around all she saw were boys, no girls. She glanced around and her eyes caught on a tall good looking asian boy, his arms were bulging with veins that showed his strength.
She broke from her stare when Rose stood beside her, they glanced at each other but were frozen with curiosity, but it didn't last, some of the boys had hauled up the savage and that made them snap back to life.
The savage slowly stood up and glanced around her head turning in sharp turns, then her glance landed on Rachel and Rose, they started to back away, all eyes were on them.
"You WILL die!" Screeched the savage, she lunged forwards with that Rachel turned on her heals, grabbed Rose, and screamed at Rose "Run! Run!".
Rachel and Rose bolted down the hill towards a huge stone wall, with one opening, then they met the opening but the dark stone topless tunnel didn't look inviting, Rachel and Rose turned and there standing a few meters away was the savage covered in dirt and blood.
"Quick, we cant leave them to die", the asian boy shouted. Him and two other boys who were surprisingly fast, legged it towards them, but they weren't going to make it in time.
The savage advanced on them teeth bared, Rachel took a step forward in front of Rose blocking the savages path to Rose. The savage lept forward and as she did Rachel pulled back her fist with all her strength and then brought it back forward, the only sound was fist to jaw, as the savage winced and fell back on the floor clutching her mouth.

The boys finally arrived and they were all holding different wepons, the savage was starting to regain its strength. Rachel shouted to the handsome boy to throw her a knife, he slid a knife across the ground and Rachel stoped it with her foot, she poised it at the savage as it climbed back up from the ground, "this is your last chance, im warning you", the savage let out a horrid laugh and spat on the ground near Rachel's feet most of it was blood. Then it stood up and once again and lunged at Rachel, Rachel span around on the spot driving her foot into its side, it stumbled back and thats when Rachel took her chance and drove the knife deep into it's chest, it crumpled to the ground, dead.

Rachel turned to Rose she looked horrified they couldn't quite take in what had happened, some of the other boys had come over along with the handsome blonde boy, he and a taller boy with dark skin broke through the crowd and towards Rose and Rachel.
"Well we have never had that happen before, most of the greenies we get can barely stand let alone fight on there first day" he looked directly at Rachel then his gaze turned to Rose.
"I'm Alby and i'm the leader of the gladers, welcome to the glade", he smiled sort of then turned to the handsome asian boy.
"This is Minho, and i think that you might be good enough to try out for a runner or hunter, as your not bad at fighting"
"Oh come on! Anyone could have done that!" Said a boy who was one of the three who came over first, he was tall and lanky.
"Come on Ben! Give them a break! I don't think you would like being stuck in the box with someone who has turned", said the blonde boy. "The names Newt by the way".
"Ok well thats thats, lets get back to work, Minho take these girls up to the training hut and give them the test", said Alby, and with that everyone started to leave apart from Minho and the two other boys.
"I'm Minho and i'm leader of the runners", Minho said glancing slightly longer at Rachel.

They started  heading back up towards the box but turned slightly towards some woods, Rachel glanced behind her and saw four boys carry the savages lifeless body away, but where to?
They arrived at a hunt and next to it was a open bit which had dummies set up with bulls eyes on them.
They walked to the side line and before Rachel and Rose sat down, Minho turned to them, "who wants to go first?" Rose still looked shocked at what had just happened so Rachel stepped forwards, "Fine, i will".
"Ok, your trial is if you can hit that dummy at the very back in the centre in the head with this knife then you can be a runner, if you don't then you will have to fight your way into being a hunter".
"She hasn't even demonstrated the skills to be a runner", Ben said sharply.
"i have seen her run and i could see she was holding back for you", he gestured to Rose, "and she can fight really well, even after being in the box", Minho said directly to Ben, Ben didn't reply.
Minho handed Rachel a small but sharp knife, its blade glistening in the sunlight.
Rachel took a deep breath and took the knife, she turned towards where the dummy was about five meters away, she drew her arm back and aimed then she threw, the knife spun and hit the dummy on the middle of its forehead.
Rachel turned to Minho and the other two runners and said,
"Now i am a runner".
